This afternoon I am minding my own business in my office. My work study student is diligently checking data for me at the other computer. All of a sudden, I see two large police officers coming down the hall. No biggie...Federal Protective Service comes through all the time as part of our security. But this time, they stop at my office.
I'm thinking, I know I locked the truck. Yes, on a federal campus, you can be issued a ticket for not locking the government vehicle! But I digress. One of them asks, "Are you Ben?". Ben is my work study student. "Come outside, we need to have a talk, man." As soon as Ben is in the hall, they handcuff him and pat him down. At which point my boss gets involved, belligerently asking what's going on. They tell him they''ll be back shortly and proceed to haul Ben off through the halls and out the front door. Now, I like Ben. He's a sweet kid and a hard worker. But apparently, Ben had a momentary lapse in judgment when he applied for a federal job. You see, to work at our facility, you get fingerprinted and they run a background check on you. It seems Ben had not one, not two, but three felony warrants out for his arrest back in St. Louis for "possession and manufacture of a dangerous drug". When they searched his backpack, they found a pot pipe among some other things. He also is apparently in trouble at the CSU campus as well. I doubt he would be in as much trouble, but he didn't show up for his court date in St. Louis and came out here to go to CSU instead. Because he lied on his paperwork, he won't be able to come back to work for us even if he does straighten everything out. I just hope he uses this opportunity to turn his life around. I'm not hiring any more people! Obviously, I'm a bad judge of character!
