Office of Dr. Rodney McKay - Monday Afternoon

Feb 06, 2006 20:57

Rodney's office was very dark except for one side that was brilliantly lit up with computer monitors.  Rodney appears engrossed in what he's working on.  Something that looks like a language, but no Earth language.

((Note: This is specifically for pete_parker01 though anyone is welcome to comment.))

"Dr. McKay," Pete said abruptly. "I can't help that I missed your class due to being beaten, and so badly injured that I nearly died!" His face was contorted, part with frustration, part with something else...anger? irritation? "So I guess next time I get attacked, I need to make sure it gets cleared with my class schedule."

Pete got to his feet and limped toward the door. He paused before exiting, and turned around.

"I heard you are one of the best, and so I'm honored to be in your class, learning you. Especially considering where you've been. But if you want to kick me out, I guess I can't stop you, can I? My uncle told me once that with great power comes great responsibility." He waved his hand around McKay's office. "In your role as a teacher, you have great power. You have the power to mold people's minds. To expand their knowledge, and to give something to them that no one else can give. And I guess it's your responsibility to decide what to do with it." He shrugged. "So I'm sorry, Dr. McKay. I want to learn from you."

"So, let me get this straight, Mr. Parker. Really. You nearly die and yet here you are miraculously healed. Oh, bruises you may have," he says, waving a hand to forestall an interruption, "but being beaten almost to death? Takes longer to heal. And as for responsibility, it is also the responsibility of the student to take an active roll in that learning process. Maybe you really were out sick, but I'm sure you could have managed to get a message to someone."

Pete considered and stepped back into the office, pulling the door shut behind him.

"And what if I couldn't. What if I wasn't somewhere that I could get a message out. What if I was unconscious until I was rescued? What then, Doctor McKay?" Pete stepped back over to the desk. "As for my injuries, yes..I heal fast. Faster than any normal person. But don't ask why, the answer might not be one you want to hear."

"Oh, please," he says, waving away the warning words. "As long as you aren't a glowy energy being or a vampiric alien, I can deal with it."

Pete refrained from smiling at the comment. "No, I'm not that. But I'm not exactly human anymore either. I was involved in an accident a year or so back, and...I was changed."

Narrowing his eyes, Rodney asks, "Changed how?" Visions of his comic-book youth fly through his head.

This close to losing his secret identity to save his college career. One didn't get expelled from a man like Dr. Rodney McKay's class after all, and expect any kind of future.

"I got bit by a genetically altered creature. And it...fundamentally changed my DNA into an analgram of it and me." Pete shrugged. "And so, yes, I heal fast."

"What heals that fast? Max Cats and Joshua dogs don't heal any faster than humans."

Pete took a deep breath. Here it came.

"No, but genetically altered spiders do."

"Spiders. As in spidersilk spiders. As in hanging upside down spiders. Those spiders?" It's...not what he was expecting. At all.

"Yes Doctor McKay," Pete folded his arms. "Those spiders. Sticking to walls, spinning webs...yeah." He let out a long breath. "And if I could have contacted someone, believe me I would have. I wasn't exactly in any position to send for help though."

Sighing and shaking his head, Rodney just says, "They're called cell-phones, Mr. Parker. I'd suggest getting acquainted with them. Look. I'm aware that things around this city aren't quite...normal. Just try not to let it happen again, all right?"

I HAD one, Pete almost said, but realized discretion in some cases IS the better part of valor.

"Yes sir, I think that's a great idea." Pete smiled hopefully. "So does this mean I can stay in your class?"

"Yes, yes, fine. Just get notes from Ms. Tam. Or, in her case, she could probably repeat the class verbatim."

"You won't regret this sir, I promise." Pete beamed as he headed for the door. "And I won't miss any more classes either." until i get completely possessed by the evil creature in my arm and have to be stopped by you and everyone else.

"Good. See that you don't. Oh, and Mr. Parker? Groveling is officially over."
