Network Storage

Having had the Mac hard drive pack up this week, I think it's about time I revisited backups. Currently, I have a selection of external hard drives which hold the backups of our music library, photos etc. We're now a 5 laptop household, which creates some issues with what's stored where and access to music files. I'm thus considering going down the NAS route. I don't need a massively expensive solution, but having, say, a pair of RAIDed terabyte drives accessible via the LAN would make life much easier.

Any suggestions? I've been looking at Netgear stuff, which seems OK, but appears to use a non-proprietary disk format, which seems a bit daft. I'd prefer not to have to spend vast amounts of dosh, but something that could store and serve music and photos, and maybe ripped DVDs to the TV would be very useful indeed.
