After all that waiting, once it happens, it happens so fast that Meredith's head is just about spinning after the fact. It happens far too quickly for her to care at all about gathering everyone together for the ceremony itself. She's never really been one for a big wedding, even when she knew more people. In the end, the only people this is really ( Read more... )

The bakery was a place that Sookie went to on a fairly regular basis, always having that soft spot in her heart for a freshly baked pie, or for biscuits readied after one last fry in the pan, but for the past few hours, she'd been caught in the Compound kitchen, trying her best to pull together a cake for the newly married couple. Prettier cakes have come and gone, and there are even a couple in the bakery that tempt Sookie in the worst of ways, but somehow, it's important to her that the happy couple have something that's made just for them. Something made in light of their newfound, married life, and the happiness that it brings. She doesn't have too much time on her hands before she decides to go with a doberge cake, with enough layers to speak of a wedding's indulgence, but homey enough to be for friends and family. Quickly tying her apron right over her dress, for the next five hours, Sookie is completely gone and missing to the world, working on baking each of the six layers and beating the frosting with a frenzied motion. Rachel was blown away at the cake. For an ad hoc island affair, it was brilliant and beautiful and probably a rival to some of the cakes available back home. Sneaking a taste of frosting, she smiled at the blonde baker and gave her a wink.

"Sookie, you have outdone yourself, Sean and Meredith are lucky people to have you cooking for them."

"Rachel, hey!" Sookie greeted as soon as she was address, grinning widely as she made her way over to the other woman and giving her a warm hug. Everything about that day had her feeling sentimental, ready to reach out to friends, ready to pull herself out of everything she'd been caught in since last month, and just ready to live again. It was amazing, what even a glimpse of love could do to a person. That stark reminder that no matter the difficulty, some things could shine through.

She felt lightly teary-eyed as soon as she pulled away, shaking her head vigorously. "You flatter a girl too much," she laughed. "Really, I'm just lucky to know the two of them, this has been... possibly one of the happiest days for me since getting here, like you wouldn't believe. It's not the first wedding that I've been to or anything, but it felt so honest and, I wish everyone could've been there. Though it was still perfect the way it was."

Sookie's excitement was positively contagious and while Rachel was in a good mood, she felt it elevate even more as she returned the hug. It almost seemed that Sookie was happier than the lucky couple, if it were even possible.

"All weddings are good, Sookie, good for the soul and good for the heart." Gesturing back to the cake, she added, "Good for the stomach, too." Rachel had some serious cake envy, she had never mastered the mysteries or baking, never really cooked anything more elaborate the the day-to-day, maybe some soups if she was in a mood.

"Oh, I don't know," Sookie laughed with a lightly wry note, shaking her head as she thought of a number of weddings she'd sat in on back in Bon Temps that seemed anything but happy. Marriages did occasionally take place out of obligation, after all, and that was something that Sookie most desired to avoid, from her own end. "I'm pretty sure that this wedding, and pardon the awful, awful joke, takes the cake."

Leaning lightly against the table, Sookie smiled complacently at Rachel. "But hey, I didn't know that you knew the happy couple. I mean, the island's small, it shouldn't surprise me. Which of the two are you here for?"

"Sean - he's actually from my world. Years and years before I knew him, but still, he's one of us."

And you stood by your own. Always. She would have for any X-Man, but more so for Sean. When she was a kid, he was one of her first teachers outside of her parents, he was kind, patient, and hard when he needed to be. And when she came to the time she lived in, she found him much the same, even if they hadn't been on the same teams.

"Oh, wow," Sookie blinked, expression blanking for a second before she grinned again, shaking her head. "It seems like everywhere I turn, there are just a lot of people from your world. I'm actually kinda jealous; right now, it's just my brother and me from mine. Though I suppose that if I had to choose just one person from to be here, he'd be it."

Running her hand against the back of her neck, Sookie shook her head and continued to glance over to Sean and Mere now and again, feeling embarrassed for it, but no less pleased to find them looking just as ecstatic with every passing minute. "Kind of amazing, though, that... you know, people can start whole new lives here. The sky's the limit."

"In my world, being kidnapped to another dimension is a superhero rite of passage."

Rachel shrugged, knowing she'd been through her share. She felt for Sookie, not having more people from home, she could only imagine what it would be like, stuck in a strange place without anyone to go though it with you. Or just her brother. Well, Rachel's brother was more capable than most, but the point remained.

"I'm happy for them, I really am." Although Rachel couldn't quite agree with the idea of settling.

"I can't claim the same for my own, though... then again, maybe I just haven't met a lot of superheroes of your sort," Sookie smiled, offering a light shrug. "Our heroes are the vets, the firefighters, policemen, people who risk their lives just as much, only on a smaller scale. Thanks to the lack of powers, and all."

Except for vampires, she thought to herself, who had so much power that it left the whole of humanity scrambling in their fear at times, yet it never seemed that the vampires were willing to do very much for humans. She shook herself free of the thought soon enough, not wanting to taint the day with thoughts of Fangtasia, or Eric Northman.

"Is it ever a relief?" Sookie asked, glancing over at Rachel. "For you guys to be free of the powers, and such. Because I know that there are days I feel a lot better for not having my telepathy from home, but then others where I... well. Wish I had them back. So I could do something, anything to help."

"For some." Look at all the mutants who had been thrilled after M-day. No more powers, no more hatred, no more hiding. For some it had been a blessing, that chance to live a normal life and forget about being different. Not Rachel, without her powers she felt diminished, reduced and off-balance.

But then, she'd been raised by the X-Men. Her entire life had been about being proud about who and what she was. She'd never been afraid of it, she'd been more afraid of somehow not growing up to be a mutant. It was as much a part of her identity as her red hair or her temper. She got it was different for others, that telepaths like Sookie that didn't have her mom or a Professor Xavier to help, but she couldn't agree with the sentiment.

"I miss mine every day. I'm too used to having them."

"I guess I can understand that," Sookie nodded, thinking about all the fictional characters she knew with powers. Thinking about the vampires that she knew, and how much they seemed to really adjust to fit their abilities, after an amount of time. Although some of them retained more of their humanity, there was no doubt that there was something different about most vampires, something so key and inherent to their identity, and Sookie could only imagine that the same held true for a great deal of mutants, as they'd been called, from Rachel's world. "And I'm sure that there are a lot of powers that wouldn't do one any good to lose, anyway. Like. I don't know, thinking about flight? Which I guess is the first thing most people think of, but I can't really think of anything I'd dislike about being able to just fly places whenever I wanted."

She grinned. "For starters, I'd actually go to Hollywood and check that out."

"Flying is totally awesome. I will give you that. I can - could use my teke to do it and there's nothing quite like it."

Rachel could feel her expression get a little wistful as she continued. She didn't talk about her powers much, it was easy to think of them just as weapons, used to fight for the survival of her friends and family, but today? Today she could talk about flying.

"You can look down on everything, dive and swoop - it's like a roller coaster without having to strap yourself into anything."

"I... can't even imagine, really. I guess I've ridden rollercoasters before," Sookie considered, crossing her arms lightly in front of her waist in contemplation, "but it was always the lack of control that really got to me. I didn't find it as fun as most others my age always seemed to. Heights kinda scare me, too."

Rubbing her hand against the back of her neck, Sookie's eyes narrowed. "Actually, y'know, there were some vampires back in my world who could fly. Not all can, but the real powerful ones, they just zoom right into the air, faster than your eyes can follow. And there were shapeshifters in my world too, who could change into animals and the like, obviously if they changed into something with wings, they'd be set. I feel like that's worth being jealous over, too."

Shapeshifters. That made her think of Rahne a little, and how she might have felt about today's events. There were so many people that should be here and weren't, that would have wanted to see Sean happy. But Rachel shook it off. It really wasn't a day to think about all that, this was a celebration after all. A day of joy and fun.

And talking about vampires. Stranger things had happened.

"Sounds like your world borrows pretty heavy from monster movies and the like."

"You could... say that, I guess. I mean, it does get pretty gory sometimes, and vampires have inspired a whole other level of goth and undead culture," Sookie considered, her nose wrinkling at the thought. In many ways, it was true. All of the creatures that might normally show up in a haunted house seemed to have been coming out of the woodwork back in Bon Temps- save, thankfully, zombies. Sookie wasn't sure that she could tolerate the idea of the brainless undead spreading some type of contact disease. "Honestly though, I don't even know the half of what's out there, according to that same shapeshifter friend of mine, so it could just be that rumors of the scary types spread faster. Because, I mean, not only are there vampires and weres out there, there's also telepathic folks, and I don't think we're as tied to the idea of Halloween."

"My world has aliens and vampires so believe me, I'm not criticizing."

Grabbing a couple of cups of punch, I passed one to Sookie. She was one of the good ones, one of those rare people who didn't have a malicious or cruel bone in her body and for whom doing good was as good as having good done for them. And Rachel suspected that the latter was lacking a little. She made it easy to smile.

"Here's to all of this. The cake the wedding, good friends and lovers."
