ONE is a new effort by Americans to rally Americans - ONE by ONE - to fight the emergency of global AIDS and
extreme poverty.
Why call it an emergency? Over ONE billion people live on less than ONE dollar a day, and nearly 40 million are
infected by HIV/AIDS. Every year 10 million young children die from preventable causes and over 100 million are
unable to attend school. Millions go to bed hungry or suffer from sickness because they don’t have access to
clean water.
Together as ONE, we can change that.
ONE is calling on American leaders to:
• Cancel 100% of debt owed by the world’s poorest countries. Each year these countries spend more on debt
repayment than on meeting the needs of their people. Those resources could be directed to providing clean
water, education and health care.
• Provide more and better aid. Allocating an additional ONE percent of the U.S. budget toward providing basic
needs like health care, education, clean water and food, would transform the futures and hopes of an entire
generation.
• Make trade fair. Poor countries have the ability to trade their way out of poverty, but international trade policies
make it difficult. A fair trade system would give people in poor countries the chance to earn their way out of
poverty by participating in the world economy.
