Well, this was anything but easy for the Bayer 04 boys. A lot of luck finally got them into the second round of the DFB Cup while their opponent, who definitely did have more fighting spirit, was left without the fruits of their will.
The first 30 minutes can be referred to as "boring". Seriously. Both teams tried to play football, the pace was high, but both team cancelled each other out in the midfield. Only one small chance appeared already after 4 Minutes for Felix Luz, who tried to gett past Adler with a header, but the bird caught that one easily.
30 minutes in to the game, Stefan Kießling had the chance for a pre-half time lead, but he seemed to be so surprised by being almost completely alone in the box that he didn't manage to net the ball.
After that, their was finally some fire in the game. RWO also had the chance to gain the lead after a great cross by Müller for the waiting Luz, but Adler had his fingertips on that. After some half-hearted tries from the second row, the teams left for the halftime break scoreless.
In the second half, Bayer 04 took the match in their hands, putting RWO under pressure. Helmes (51.), Friedrich (52.) and Kießling (55.) had the chance to settle the score in Bayer's favour, but RWO's goalie Semmler did what he's being paid for.
With that, the fire seemed to have burned down on Bayer's side which made the match totally open again. Imprecise passes and crosses were all Bayer had to offer, which gave the RWO defence a well-deserved break.
69 minutes into the match, Renato finally managed to score. Vidal's pass across the midfield came at the right time, and Renato hammered the ball into the box.
The final phase of the match was anything but boring. RWO was trying to equalise and threw everything at Bayer they had. They were rewarded 4 minutes into additional time. Lüttmann's shot seemed to be born out of desperation when it surprised Adler, who had done everything in his might so far to keep a clean sheet.
The first half of the extra time belonged to RWO. They seemed to know that there was a fair chance of them kicking out Bayer 04 out of the cup. 97 minutes into the match, RWO was rewarded for their spirit again. Lüttmann passed to the seemingly unstoppable Terranova, whose shot Adler managed to get his hands on, but to no avail. The ball tumbled across the line. 2-1 for RWO.
This actually seemed to wake the Bayer 04 boys up again who finally stood up and fought. It was Theofanis Gekas who managed to equalise right before the break.
Then came the hour of Patrick Helmes. Gekas managed to get around Semmler with a sliced shot, but Uster scratched that one from the line. Vidal, seemingly unimpressed by that, has his head on that ball, Helmes gets it and makes his goal. 2-3 for Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Opinion: It was a victory. Nothing more. 'Cept for René Adler and our new chocolate babe Constant Djakpa, the boys definitely didn't live up to the expectations which everyone seems to have in them. Sure, the boys are young and stuff, but seriously? If they don't manage to get a grip on their scoring abilities, they can kiss their dreams of playing international again goodbye. Not scoring doesn't win you any games, and René Adler can only do that much if his defence continues to sleep like that. *sighs* I really do have a weird feeling in my guts concerning this season, and I'm absolutely sure I'm not liking that.
