So I had to go to practice tonight and it was in a different location. Because I was stuck in the house for a bit I was about five minutes late leaving. The route was pretty simple but, with my mind elsewhere, I missed the exit. While this meant more lost time I just went to the next exit and turned right. The first light I figured the road would back-track/parallel the way I came and get me to the road where I meant to turn.
As I was driving and looking for the road, up ahead I saw an intersection with two cars waiting to make left turns across my lanes. I wasn't speeding. The first car pulled out and, had it been me, I would have waited for my car to pass. It wasn't close but close enough for my eyes to follow that car to make sure it cleared as I passed.
And then . . . the car behind him pulled out too. Never slowed down, paused or anything. I didn't see it at first because my eyes were on the first car and I couldn't imagine the second one pulling out. I jammed the brakes and hit the horn hard. It was close, not THAT close, but close enough that I was shaken pretty good. As a result I missed the turn and ended up at a dead end street. I stopped, settled a bit, checked a map and back-tracked again. Having made the proper turn I then got turned around again getting to the place. I finally made it, forcing myself to be calm and take my time in getting there.
When I pulled up into the lot there was a row of oaks along the back. I just held one for a long time to try and settle down. I then helped them load some stuff into the shed for a few minutes just to do something and get my mind right. For those that might have wondered why I had an oak leaf in practice and held it all night, now you know.
