Yeah, 's my reaction as well. If you're going to have schools such as we do, then this is pretty fucking obvious.

Why dwell on things when our nation is being tested?), or Shakespeare (he's dead and I can just rent the videos anyway), or anything else...

This actually touches on deeper issues, and those issues are more the root of the problem than the more superficial issues of core curriculum content. Traditionally, as a society, we feel that people are entitled to their own way of thinking and believing (as long as it's not too weird and they're quiet about it, etc...), and that children are essentially the property of their parents. This is really deeply rooted stuff, almost subliminal.

Public schools, then, undermine both positions: they tell you what to think, and how to think about it, and they do so despite your parents' desires. And in many cases, attending them is effectively mandatory. That last bit is a big part of the problem: government forces you to give up your children for state-mandated indoctrination. Come to think of it, when put that way, I'm not a big fan of public schools, either. ;p

And there's a whole network of other factors. I mean, where to begin?
