I'm so incredibly worried, but there's so much else to do. My aunt stayed in the hurricane. Last time she left for a hurricane, nothing happened, so she didn't want to be inconvenienced again this time. Fortunately enough, she was at my cousin's house in Covington, which is on the better side of the lake. Her husband stayed at their house in Medarie, last I heard, which is not. She's a strong woman, but I keep imagining her sitting on a roof with no food. My cousin and her husband were wise enough to take their baby to Monroe, on the Arkansas border. They're fine. We probably won't know for weeks about the others, since there's no power or phones. My dad keeps saying how shocked he is that, if nothing else, she left her grandbaby. She would never leave her grandbaby. He's depressed. He doesn't know if his sister is okay and his hometown is utterly destroyed. He said yesterday he feels like a part of him just died. If and when New Orleans is rebuilt and if and when we go there, there will be nothing left to visit. The animals in the zoo and aquarium are all almost assuredly dead. The French Quarter will never again be the French Quarter and all of our favorite place and all of the icons are flattened. They even mentioned Rocky and Carlos' by name on the knews as being blown to smithereens. It's a dirty little restaurant with disgusting food, but it was blocks from my dad's home in Chalmette, a childhood favorite of both him and me, and even where we ate after my grandfather's funeral. That was pretty hard-hitting and made it more personal than it already was.
And now, everyone's focused on the looting. The stupid president has said no tolerance for looting. I know he wants to uphold justice, but for god's sake, there are only so many police and military. People are stranded in tops of buildings. People are going stir crazy and committing much worse crimes stuck in the Superdome. Priorities need to be straightened. It's not like anyone can do anything with the material goods being stolen, formers owners or looters. And I can't imagine anyone can punish people stealing food and water a diapers in desperation.
It's a bad situation and I wish I knew how to help. Where should I send money? The Superdome, the Astrodome, the Burger Center, Texas Parks, Lafeyette, Baton Rouge? Should my church organize a drive for blood or food or clothes or money? And then again, where should it go? If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
