Our second book of the day is Jennifer Cloud’s Restless Shadows. It’s a truly creepifying tale with a little romance mixed in. Don’t forget to log in to the blog to download, and it will only be up until we reach ten downloads.
Anna Carswell is a sensitive. Knowing that her parents don’t really want her or understand her, she attempts suicide at the age of 16. Death comes to gather her up and they become fascinated with one another. Anna’s parents discover her before she dies, however, and her life is saved. After her recovery, she finds that she can tell when someone’s been marked by death and occasionally sees him as he goes about his business. She even has a nickname for him, Shades, and she blames him for ruining her life, forcing her to see death everywhere she looks.
Nick’s sister was kidnapped at gunpoint by a home intruder when Nick was a little boy, then raped, strangled, and left in a ditch. He believes it was his fault-he forgot to lock the front door-but that the boogeyman in the basement did it. He believes the boogeyman was Death. After his sister’s death and continuing throughout his childhood, Death visits him, slipping in under his bed to whisper secrets Nick doesn’t want to hear.
Nick and Anna cross paths in college. Though they’ve been interested in one another for a while, the spark doesn’t have a chance to grow until they both sign up to go on a trip to Europe. Neither knows the other has a secret goal for this trip. They’re both hoping to track Death down in its lair, which they believe might be the catacombs under Paris.
Professor Archel hopes to get something out of this trip too. He says he wants a paper, but what he really wants is Anna. As he plans the trip and his conquest of her, he becomes so obsessed that his narcissism turns to madness and, after he discovers her interest in her fellow student, decides to kill Nick to gain her love.
Restless Shadows, set amidst the bone yards and ossuaries of Italy and France, is infused with a dark intensity that will keep you reading long after the lights should be out.
And when you do turn out the lights? Don’t forget to check under the bed.
