l-lmao idk if i'm doing this right, but i'm more than willing to write a new one if you want me to!

( sync )

He watches it twice to make sure that what he's seeing is real. The first time he watches it, he isn't really watching it; it's just something that his eyes follow, but never really follow. The ringing from the gun being fired is what brings him back to half-reality, and it's Ayumu Narumi's words and the burning of electricity against his skin that brings him back completely. He has to hand it to the guy: he has a way of getting under his skin and in him even when he might not mean to.

But, Eyes supposes that - this time - Ayumu Narumi has won completely and utterly.

And so, he hits replay and watches it again; until the numbness sets it and his eyes - forever dry - close as he just passes out on his sofa. There is no delight being taken, just blissfully wonderful blank slates in his dreams that make him think, ah, maybe if I spent a little bit more time with him, then I could have prevented that.

(Both he and Kanone know that that is not true. Kanone would have laughed and smiled oh so sweetly, oh so sadly, and told him that the people who died that day would have been numbered at three, then.)

He thinks that maybe if he had the heart to kill him back then, if he had been wholly prepared instead of being relieved that the God of Salvation didn't ask murder of him - maybe Kanone wouldn't have had to suffer for so long.

(Kanone didn't look like he was suffering; he looked resigned, certainly, but his smiles were always a little strained when Eyes thought back on it.)

In his dreams, Kanone smiles like the sun saying, "You couldn't have stopped it even if you tried. Really," a genuine laugh here, "There was nothing you could do." And, he kisses him like the summers they would spend together as children.

Finally, Eyes thinks as he leans into the embrace of what could never be, back in his dreams where he finds that both he and Kanone are crying. He wakes up all too soon with dry eyes and fading thoughts, raising a hand to press the heel of his palm against one eye - and thinks, a month after Kanone's death: I have to go and see him.

With dirt under his shoes, drier than his eyes ever could be in air like this while waiting for the moisture the ocean brings to the sky, he presses an iris against Kanone's grave.
