(no subject)

I'm giving up on Across the Face of the World for a while. I love fantasy, but a book that cares more about what the hills look like than naming it's main characters is not fun.

So I'm reading Needful Things. Good, scary in that Stephen King way, where he adds the sinister to the mundane. It's one of his ensemble cast books, rather than a few major characters against a bigger backdrop. It's pretty cool, because I think from growing up and living in the suburbs my entire life, even now, I am entranced by the workings of a small town.

Bag of Bones is on the shortlist afterward. Apparently it's more about a man adopting a young girl than it is about ghosts, but that's how a scary story should be.

Also, on the subject of Stephen King, the Mist has to be the weirdest director's cut ever. There is no additional content, no content removed, no rearranging of any subject matter, dialogue or even a single frame. What is different is that director's cut is in black and white. And therein lies the problem. The film was not shot to look good in black and white. Some colors do not look good at all in black and white, most notably lighter shades of blue, red and green. Yellow and purple are less intense victims. The film just looks grey, which makes it less scary to me.
