Ok, so here's the update I've been promising. Actually,
here's the update. Thought shall not reinvent the wheel.
So, I've got a job. Here's the deal:
I won't be engineering or programming or writing code or architecture or design or testing or anything like that. I'll be helping lawyers write patent application, and researching new inventions. This is both exactly what I have always wanted to do, and at the same time, a huge departure from what I've been expecting to do. Anyone I've cooked dinner for knows that building or creating something is what drives me. This doesn't have to be a physical object, it can be idea or design or anything that I can point to and describe as something I've brought into the world. Now, instead of modules, I'll be pointing at legal documents. This is not a problem. The job requires all those soft engineering skills I like so much, like quality communication, design scheduling, and task management. You know, the stuff they don't really teach much of at Case.
The job requires a decent amount of closed-lip-ness. I won't be talking about what I'm doing here online. Heck, I won't even be talking about work projects with my wife. Just know I get to learn about all the really cool toys before they show up on engadget. This is the nature of IP.
Minneapolis is a pretty awesome city. Chicago feels like a city that's like Pittsburgh or Cleveland, only actually successful at stuff. Minneapolis feels like a Pittsburgh or Cleveland that planned for the future, from having a sane and logical road map to keeping the economy current.
Our apartment is flat out awesome. It's huge and inexpensive, but not cheap. The back porch over looks the Mississippi. The Mighty Mississip. Click through to GK's Xanga if you want to see the website. Here's the big plusses for me:larger kitchen, permitted to grill on the porch, dishwasher, the bus to work literally stops at my parking lot, good data packages available, large enough living room to cut it in half to make an office and still have a large room, room for a queen bed and a reading chair in bedroom.
We'll be moving at the end of Feb. It seems like it's so far away and way to close all a the same time.
Now, back to work.
