Savage Spelljammer

so msnuncheon tells me that VoiceofIsaac was surprised I was running a Spelljammer game (using Savage Worlds as the system). Since he sounded interested, a short summary of our first session.

First, some background: we're using our own spheres rather than the trinity of Greyspace/Krynnspace/Realmspace, inspired by our own world during the age of sail & colonization. Our heroes are technically pirates (since they operate without the benefit of a letter of marque & reprisal), but they confine their predations to freeing slaves.

As for the characters: Captain Antamiir was stripped of his rank by the Imperial Elven Navy and wants to clear his name. Falathar's family was killed by scro raiders. Pierre, navigator and musketeer, was disowned by his family and seeking to start anew. The dwarven cleric (who missed our first session) was a former slave who found religion in the holds of a neogi deathspider. And the wizard, Santo Sloan? Nobody's too sure about him.

Anyway, on to the session:

The away team - I mean, the PCs - made their way to the home of the
sage Minrith Brel, a tower clinging to the side of the asteroid
called the Rock of Bral. At his request, they brought with them a
magical artifact that they had discovered - a brass sextant of
unknown age and origin. Brel had been unable to identify it when
they brought it to him earlier, but he claimed that he had found a
second similar piece and wanted to see the two of them together.

After serving wine to his guests, Minrith opened the case - but he
was interrupted by Falathar, who spotted a disturbing reflection in
his wineglass and vaulted over the mage, putting a sword to his
throat. The door to Minrith's back room opened, revealing the
sinister visage of a neogi…

FLASHBACK - 72 hours earlier. The vessel drops to tactical speed,
and Falathar and Pierre spot an ongoing battle: a neogi ship is
grappled to a tradesman. Advancing to ramming speed, the hammership
traded shots with the spider before slamming into it and knocking it
free of the tradesman. The PCs boarded, Falathar leading the charge.

Antamiir and Falathar boarded the ship, quickly capturing the weapons
crew - but the neogi captain and his umber hulk slaves let a
counterattack heading up a group of marines. The captain was
severely wounded, and Falathar was cut off from him by the massive
creature. Meanwhile the neogi boarding party on the tradesman had
managed to get one of the catapults around and was preparing to fire,
when Pierre made an incredible long-distance musket shot, caving its
skull in.

The crew of the neogi ship was dealt with and the slaves freed, Of
particular note were the heroics of crewman Barnes, who accounted for
two umber hulks with nothing but a knife!

One of the sailors reported back that he had found something the
neogi had been looting from the tradesman: a duskwood box containing
a brass sextant…
