I have to admit, I really thought last Friday was really going to blow up in my face. Up until the last minute, I was facing the prospect of going to see the Nine Inch Nails concert by myself (thank you
waynutty for coming with me). Furthermore, it was three hours of rush hour traffic going to Irvine. The previous time I saw them in concert, it was a disappointment.
I did miss Peaches and the first couple of songs by Bauhaus (Kat and I were in a very slow line buying t-shirts) but boy was I blown away by NIN. Not only was the music fantastic but the light show was sensational. Right before Trent went on, a curtain of linked metal rods was lowered into the front part of the stage in between the band area and the audience. At first I thought this was supposed to be an imprisonment metaphor but after a few songs it was apparent what the real purpose was. Some very cool lighting effects were projected onto it. Soon we had the band playing with effects in front and behind the band simultaneously. It made for some exciting visuals. I could only marvel at the technical prowess needed to pull off this show. It was easily the best concert I have ever been to.
Now, for most people taking a three drive after work to see a four hour concert with an hour drive back is a full Friday night. Especially, if they've been up since three in the morning. But not me, I had to go see then the last half of the WUT show. For my non-Rocky friends, WUT or Wild and Untamed Things is the Rocky Horror Picture Cast that I have been a member of for over six years. I was sorry I couldn't perform with them that night but Trent doesn't perform often and I missed him at the Hollywood Bowl earlier this year. Anyway, our show was good as usual. I think my cast is probably the most under-appreciated cast in the SoCal area. I think I went to bed at about 5am.
I spent the rest of the weekend indulging in my geek side. Saturday, I was at a Masquerade LARP where I acted out the role of an amnesiac Assamite Vampire. Sunday, I ran a tabletop fantasy roleplaying set in historical Middle Earth, 2000 years before the War of the Ring. All in all, a fun weekend.
