Sometimes we-all of us-are so busy focusing on our daily lives and where we are going that we forget to see what is going on around us: the two boys ravenously eating the meat out of green coconut shells on the sidewalk in Praça João Mendes; the woman who crosses herself as the bus descends into the tunnel at the end of the Paulista because, if you think about it, there is a church above at street level; the woman who runs up to someone whose back is turned to us and smothers her girlfriend in an embrace; the couple on the metro whose argument has devolved into fuming silence; the girl crossing the street with tears streaming down her face; the gay boy with red eyes; the guy on a quiet street who claps in front of every building to let the doormen and parking lot attendants know that there is bread and coffee if they are hungry…

Sometimes it is necessary to un-focus in order to see what is going on around us.
