"Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain." The Wizard of Oz
I live in an office at the corner of the hospital.
It's funny that people call it my glass office, because it really isn't any more glass than anything else. The walls are circular and I have a good deal of space, including my own private bathroom, but it's my corner that I take up residence in for ten hours a day (eight hour work days don't exist in my world) and oversee everything that's happening.
It sounds regal. It isn't.
The truth is, I have to make sure that everything runs as smoothly as it can. And it never does, but I still try. When something goes wrong I'm the one that it falls on, and I'm okay with that because I could have done something different anyway, and I still try and make sure it puts itself right again. Sometimes it's not that easy, but I still try.
When new interns come the first place they are sent to is my office. It scares them, but it gives them a chance to realize that this isn't a game. I have to teach them what's acceptable and what isn't, and I have to do it in about ten minutes time because that's all they're willing to spare before becoming completely scared about the choice they've just made.
I tell them they'll do fine if they pay attention and send them into the corridors. It's part of the job, and then I go back to my office.
I don't want to be known as the woman behind the curtain, but sometimes that's what I am. And for those moments, it has to be all right. Because without the curtain in place, everything might fall down.
