I just went to Tully's for my afternoon jolt of coffee and, while waiting, I overhear a girl say to her friend:
"Well, we *were* friends...and then we were lovers...and now we're enemies!"
I burst out laughing right there on the spot! Indeed, that relationship progression seems to be a common one... ;)

As for your argument, I'm ambivalent in my response. On the one hand I agree that starting a relationship as lovers is less likely to lead to long term friendship than if there was a solid respect prior to hormonal-wackiness ensuing, but I don't think that doing so precludes people from maintaining friendships after they stop screwing -- it depends so much more on how the people treat each other over the course of their interactions. I'd be willing to bet that the relationships with your exes that are strained are so because of more than just a lack of pre-coital friendship! ;) And as for converting close friends to lovers, sometimes that can be *very* awkward, and can even kill a friendship, especially if the sexual encounter itself doesn't go well...I won't even throw out examples, but I'm sure you can imagine (or have experienced) this for yourself.
