So last night Tony's computer started smelling funny. Let me mention that I have a cold and cannot breathe through my nose, and Tony has a terrible sense of smell. It did get bad enough that we both could smell it, and I have to wonder how long we were exposed before we noticed. Anyway, I recognized the smell as the smell of an inflatable beach ball or tube. Generally when you let the air out, that air smells like this did. So I googled until I could figure out what inflatables are generally made of. Apparently several kinds of plastic, most commonly PVC. So I googled PVC. I come up with "PVC: The Poison Plastic." Cue opening all the windows in the apartment, and eventually sleeping on the couch. So we're not entirely sure why his computer started smelling of PVC, but we're replacing the part that was giving off the smell. PVC is apparently used in many many things, is also known as vinyl, and is notorious for it's "New Shower Curtain" smell. Good to know that so many things in my apartment are toxic. I'm worried about health risks for the exposure last night, but from what I can find online, it's more of a prolonged exposure thing.
