Overcoming Uncertainty by Sean Ogle
Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Write down a major life goal you have yet to achieve or even begin to take action on. For each goal, write down three uncertainties (read: fears) you have relating to each goal. Break it down further, and write down three reasons for each uncertainty. When you have three reasons for your fear, you’ll be able to start processing the change because you know where the fear stems from. Now you’ll be able to make a smaller changes that push you towards your larger goal. So begins the process of “trusting yourself.”
Time for a life goal I don't discuss too regularly anymore: I want to write a book. I have a couple of stories already started, and one nearly finished, but not there yet.
Three uncertainties:
1. It may not be any good.
2. Even if it is good, I may not be able to get it published.
3. Even if it is good and eventually published, people may not like it.
Three reasons for uncertainties:
1a. I don't write as often as I used to, so I feel like I'm out of practice.
1b. I don't know if my premise(s) are as good as I think they are.
1c. I feel like I rushed through some portions and so they're not as good as they should/could be.
2a. I know nothing about publishing.
2b. Many people who write good books have difficulty getting them published.
2c. I know nothing about publishing.
3a. When I go back and re-read parts I've written, they seem less than exciting or well-written.
3b. I'm not sure how many of my edits that I make stem from not liking and how many are the results of too many reads.
3c. Even if my premise(s) are good, I don't know if people will find them interesting.
Some of these uncertainties and rationale for them are kind of hard to explain, which is why they sound a bit similar to each other. Hopefully others will understand them, but it's more important that I do. The question is, can I be brave enough to face them now that I get it?
Nette away to do the last prompt! I think, anyway.
