Good review of the book without giving the plot away. I rather liked the fast pacing of the book, very much along the Pulp lines, and the characters were nicely fleshed out, too.
You made a good point about the never present mom.
I hope we get a sequel or series based on the book.
Your post came at exactly the same time I was noodling with the notion of coming up with a modern pulp setting sort-of-inspired by The Venture Brothers, albeit a non-failure version played a little straighter.
The notion of a relatively system-light game with a setting of "You're the family and friends of a mighty pulp heroic lineage" screams coolness to me.
After the awesomeness I found in 'Whales on Stilts', it's welcome to see that there's more authors out there giving kids their necessary allotment of pulp.

I'm squarely in Wilde country at the moment, finishing up (well, trying) the second book, DOC WILDE AND THE MAD SKULL. There's also a classified Wilde project in the works...
