Driving Blind on TV: Pushing Daisies

So, I watched the pilot for Pushing Daisies.

First, credit where it's due: snidegrrl and meercat totally put this onto our household radar.

Second: Holy crap you must watch this show. This has easily taken my #1 spot, at least based on first-episode strength, for the Fall season. I still loves me some Reaper, but Pushing Daisies has the top spot simply because ( Read more... )

My wife has been excited about the show since she heard about the premise. I kind of shrugged non-commitally after she gushed about it, because the premise sounded a bit tired and one-shot.

But she watched it the other night and when I popped in, I could see she was glowing. Then I caught the tail end -- last fifteen -- and my jaw dropped. The execution was brilliant, and unexpected: it was like British comedy in neon.

It's not too serious, nor bleak or dark; its bright, witty, and somehow upliftingly human.

My interest had been vaguely piqued at all the early pre-debut reviews, but I only inadvertantly watched the first ep (too lazy to change the channel), but I fell in love with said ep. Just wonderful. TPTB better damn well give it half a chance and leave it be for a full season....

The real kicker is, will it retain its audience this week? Some "promising" shows had precipitous drop-offs their second week, and so building audience and keeping it is key.

I was going to say, "Judging by the people I know, it should be a monster hit!" But then I knew people who watched Wonderfalls and Firefly too. At least Pushing Daisies isn't on Fox.

Thanks for the tip! I'd meant to watch it but forgot, so reminded by your post I caught the first episode at abc.com, and my TiVo will get the rest.

I spent the entire show thinking "Holy shit. Someone took Amelie and put it on TV. I think I'm in love."
