Lost In Translation - Like in The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola creates a rich, atmospheric film. The film takes us into a foreign place, yet brings a sense of familiarity to Tokyo as though we are there seeing it with the characters. The film is beautifu visually, the soundtrack is perfect, and the acting was excellent. The story, while I might be somewhat weirded out by the old dude/younger woman thing, was totally believable and made complete sense. I think this is a good one to see in a big theater with good sound.
Kiki's Delivery Service - I haven't watched this in awhile due to not wanting to hook up the laserdisc player, so I rented the DVD to see if it had anything interesting. They didn't really put any extras on it and the color doesn't seem to be quite as good as the LD version, but this is such a great movie. Parts of it are so cute that they make me cry. I love love love this movie.
Swimfan - I thought this movie would totally suck, but it was great! The whole role-reversal of the dude as the victim was a nice twist on a formulaic genre.
Bowling for Columbine - far too sensational, but brought up some interesting points of discussion. I was disappointed that the film was less than thorough, but a good movie to start a dialogue.
