I haven't done one of these in awhile, so here's a really quick peak at some of the movies I've watched lately.
Y Tu Mama Tambien - SO GOOD. I was prepared to be annoyed because I wasn't falling for all the hype. This is a great film, you should see it for it's extreme hotness. I didn't realize that this was the same director as
A Little Princess, which is, of course, an entirely different film, but one of the best kid's movies I've ever seen. I also noticed that he's directing the Prisoner of Azkaban movie, which will be totally incredible.
Anyhow, did I mention this movie is HOT? see it!
Gaudi Afternoon - Great cast, but weak script. I found it thoroughly enjoyable while I was watching it, but after the movie was over there wasn't really much there to hold onto. There are a few plot twists that I don't want to spoil. It was decent, so perhaps you should see it.
Happy Together - I found this film somewhat frustrating in that the relationship between the guys wasn't particularly interesting to me. Happy Together was almost rebellious though in that it shows their relationship in an honest (and sometimes boring) way. This is how people actually relate to one another. On an artistic level, this film succeeds, but there wasn't a particularly interesting statement being made in the film that appealed to me.
Maid In Manhattan - okay, so this is not the greatest movie ever. It's not even that good, but damnit if I am not a total sucker for a farfetched romantic comedy. I was expecting to be completely offended by the premise of this film, but they treated it well. I am in love with J-Lo and you should be too. see it!
Wilde - I have no idea why I didn't see this one sooner. This is a film about Oscar Wilde starring Stephen Fry and Jude Law. Both give incredible performances. I thought this movie would be totally boring, but it was great. I have no idea if it is at all historically accurate. see it!
Rabbit-Proof Fence - Well-shot and well-acted. This is the true story of two girls taken from their home against their will to be assimilated into white culture. They escape from the school they are sent to and WALK an incredible distance trying to get home. The acting is great from kids who had never acted before. The making-of featurette on this DVD is really interesting. They follow the casting process for the kids in the film and it's really great. See it!
Far From Heaven - I was really looking forward to this film, but it fell a bit flat. The production design is STUNNING and is, by far, the star of Far From Heaven. Patricia Clarkson is in this...I think she is amazing and wish she would have some non-supporting roles. The melodrama factor got a bit old, but this was an interesting film in terms of being an excercise in expanding a played out genre. see it.
Salmonberries - I think I had some sort of scathing review in mind for this one, but I will simply say this: THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST MOVIES OF ALL TIME. BEWARE. CAUTION. (it's almost so bad that you have to see it.)
The Truth About Jane - aw hell. If this wasn't done "made-for-tv" style it probably wouldn't have sucked as much. The girl who played Jane was actually a decent actor, but Stockard Channing was TOTALLY AWFUL. Parts of this film were excruciating, but I guess it fit with the whole adolescent theme. skip it.
