this made a lot of sense. sterotypes are grand narratives that help people position themselves in the world. which is sometimes a good thing, but can turn dangerous when one constructs and identity based on these models. i understand what you are saying, but these gay narratives are polluting the humanity of the individual person. i don't define myself as a gay man, i don't introduce myself as queer. it does hold a low priority in my "image," but it certainly has affected my identity and how i relate to myself and the rest of the external world. i may not be stereotypically gay, and when people do find out my sexual orientation, i am happy that i can be a model that is not perpetuated in film and television.

i think mysterious skin is about both brutality and repression. brady corbet's character is so sexually repressed he becomes asexual and confuses his molestation with being abducted by aliens. but there are also other gay films like luster which is considered a "post-closet" film, which doesn't even touch on either brutality and repression. but shortbus, is definitely aligned with your experiences in ireland where being queer is indistinguishable from being heterosexual.

i think you made more sense than i did. it was such a good read...
