So I came home from working the opening shift this morning (5am-10am) and I was so tired, that when my mom suggested I go lay down in my room for a little while...I decided I would. I subsequently fell asleep and the next thing I know, I hear Ken yelling something from the garage to mom in the house, mom getting a scared loud tone in her voice, I hear James run outside...now, I'm almost awake at this point (mind you, i'm a very light sleeper and hear almost everything in my sleep but dismiss it unless it's serious...but what I heard next definately WOKE ME) I heard my Mom in the hall on the phone, yelling to the 911 dispatcher that our dryer was on fire.
I awoke with a start just as my Mom was pounding on my door, "Get out! Get out of the house! The dryer's on fire in the garage!"..."What??!!"..."Ken can't put it out! She (the dispatcher) said to get out NOW!"...I had enough coherency at this point to grab my purse (with my I.D. and cell phone and everything in it) and run outside. My room is about 20 feet from where the dryer is, separated only by a door to my room, and a door to the garage...both of which were open.
I came out of my room and there was smoke in the hall and as I took a few steps into the garge, it was everywhere. The carpet the dryer and washer sit on was burnt and there was water everywhere, and the smell was like burnt metal, fabric and plastic. Ken had been in the garage when it broke out (thank god )and had heard an odd noise...he went over to the dryer and opened it and there were flames and an intense heat. He yelled for mom, grabbed the house and tried to put it out, but it wouldn't go out, so somehow he and James managed to disconnect the gas and push it out onto the driveway, at least somewhat away from the house. That is where I came out.
Now all four of us were in the garage and the dryer was on the drveway, billowing smoke. The door was closed and the metal was starting to buckle and we were starting to fear it would explode...and we have 5 cars in the driveway. A police officer (Chani) showed up and radio-ed for a fire engine, and then came the fire engine roaring up. I think the scariest thing was when they jumped out all in gear, went over to the dryer with their hose, pulled the door open, and flames SHOT out.
They got the fire out ok, and we moved the dryer (which is now burnt and duck-taped back together) into the backyard. It was still under warranty so we have the people from Best Buy coming on Tuesday to verify the incident, and then we should be getting a new one.

that was kinda scary. just the thought of losing everything...and since we rent the house, we have no homeowner's insurance. man, nothing ever seems to go our way...
