09 - Four Weddings and a Funeral

The movie as a whole I didn't like. They're were great characters like Scarlett, Gareth and the newly-ordained priest played by Rowan Atkinson and there were also a lot of funny bits and clever jokes scattered throughout but the plot just didn't work for me. OK. So maybe I was liking it, probably even enjoying it, until I reached the ending. I mean, what's the point of attending four weddings then agreeing in the end that not being married would be the best option. I was really disappointed with the ending; it was a happy but somehow tragic as well. On top of that was the horrible acting of the female lead that I can't ignore. She's like older Bella from Twilight. Because the Bella from New Moon only has that squirming expression that is just dying to kiss Edward and Jacob on every scene. I wonder what the Bella from Eclipse would offer.

I rarely appreciate poetry but the one recited during the funeral was really well-crafted and full of emotion. That feeling of losing a loved one to death, this is that feeling in words:

Funeral Blues
W.H. Auden

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Rating: 3½ out 5. That extra half was for the splendid poetry.
