OH MY GOD I FINALLY FINISHED THE BLOODY THING XD XD XD XD My nakama FST of DESPAIR is DONE. LET ME RUN AROUND IN GLEE FOR A FEW SECONDS….AND WE’RE DONE.
This FST has been two years in the making and I wish I was kidding when I say that. But it’s true. It’s undergone a few transformations since I tried to tweak it for Family Month way back when. I hadn’t managed to finish it in time for that theme BUT IT’S DONE NOW AND THAT’S WHAT MATTERS AMIRITE?
I love One Piece dearly, that’s fairly obvious. But unlike some of the larger anime fandoms, FSTs are rare in our fandom (except for this month. Rock on, abarero!), and so I wanted to contribute. But instead of doing individual character FSTs, I wanted to do a FST that focused on a huge theme in One Piece: nakama. And in particular the Straw Hat nakama because that’s the one I know the most about :3.
In One Piece, nakama essentially is family. Ever since this word’s been mentioned it’s become one of those "pressure words"; you don’t treat this term lightly, nor do you mock the bond it refers to. Pirates generally treat the word with respect; with some pirate crews, nakama-killing is a crime worthy of death. On the other hand, there are also pirate captains who could care less for their nakama and are quite willing to massacre their own crews to further their goals. And it's not just pirates who feel this important bond. Most recently, shipwrights, archaeologists and marines have also used the word, talking about this stronger familial bond instead of the generic definition.
Ultimately, the nakama bond is as strong as or stronger than a family bond. You live and die for your nakama and their dreams, and they do the same for you. Some of the Straw Hats have left behind cherished friends and family members to be on this crew, so the people on board have to be pretty special. It’s one of the things I love about the series is how much everyone is willing to sacrifice for this bond. The characters also aren't swallowed by this bond. Every member of the Straw Hat crew remains an individual, chasing his or her own dream, while simultaneously carrying the others forward to their own dreams.
Now some technical stuff. This FST’s set up sort of…odd. Basically I wanted to put in songs that solely reflected a character’s emotions towards his or her nakama (either from a specific scene or from a period of time, like the course of a story arc). But I also wanted to have songs that reflected the crew as a whole, their general attitude towards life and towards each other. So there are three songs for each crew member, followed by a nakama-related song, which are generally applicable to every Straw Hat. There are also quotes for each individual-specific song (and explanations, because if you haven’t guessed already I am long-winded) which for the most part reflect the song they precede. You decide if I succeeded. And yes, I’ll confess, I copped out a bit and used two songs from the series’ OSTs. FST-noob, I know *hangs head* But they worked so well! I almost used "Sail On" by Mastplan too. I’m so unoriginal ;_;

So if you haven’t read all the chapters, but still want the songs for when you do catch up, you may want to just pick up the zip at the bottom. Oh yeah, and there’s cursing scattered throughout in the songs and in my descriptions because come on, pirates. Forty-two songs, ten insider pages, one cover, one back-cover and eight icons. None of the images are in the zip because of possible spoilers (sorry!) so if you want my godawful covers just "right-click, save as" and save them to your own computer :D

Substitute "pirate" for "spaceman" and it works better :D Luffy never cares about his crews’ pasts; rather he judges them on how he sees them and on their actions (or reactions) to different situations. And there is something upbeat and accepting about this song, almost simplistic in its willingness to follow a crazy dream. Just like Luffy.
Luffy: Of course I don’t know a damn thing about swords, you dumbass!
Usopp: Wha…what’s he talking about?
Luffy: I don’t know how to navigate, either. I can’t cook. I can’t even lie!
Usopp: Oi!
Luffy: I know that I need others to HELP me if I want to keep on living!

The first to admit how much he relies on his nakama to help him, Luffy is such an easy-going guy when it comes to who is on his crew. He pretty much is a love-at-first-sight, meeting people for the first time and deciding right then that they’re his nakama now. The other person has pretty much no say in the matter. For a while, it seemed Luffy was broken of this habit of asking-first: he says he hates Robin the first time the Straw Hats meet her, and even after fighting Franky he still holds a grudge for what Franky did to Usopp. But with the Thriller Bark Arc, it seems Luffy’s back to normal. Or he just thinks having a skeleton or zombie on his crew would be cool. Either or XD Hopefully the others will stop Luffy from filling the Thousand Sunny with hundreds of zombies liberated from Thriller Bark although Brooke can stay :D
Luffy: I’m no good. If I stay the way I am now, I won’t be any good. After I was defeated by Aokiji, I started thinking about it…If there are any more strong guys like him in the ocean ahead of us, then I have to be stronger…because otherwise I can’t protect my nakama!! I have nakama who’re not strong…but I still want them to be with me! So I have to be stronger than anybody else…or I’ll lose them all!
Blueno: Then…what will you do?

The others also rely on Luffy to be captain, leader and protector, the one to take on the strongest fighters, the greatest threats to their survival. Although he’s not the brightest, and willing to ignore very large dangers for the mere chance of an adventure, Luffy is quick to defend his nakama against any threat, real or imagined, and is very perceptive when it comes to saying and doing exactly the right thing to make a situation better (usually, this involves beating someone up, so I may be giving him too much credit, but since this is a shonen manga about pirates on a sea where strength talks, beating someone up usually is the best course to solving a problem). He doesn’t really need a reason to fight for his nakama, either. They’re nakama, and if someone hurts them, that’s all the reason Luffy needs. Also, I’m a sucked for puns. Of course he’s not made of steel, he’s made of rubber! *is shot*

Oh, look at me pun. Two promises rule Zoro’s life: his promise to Kuina and his promise to Luffy. But there seems to be this unspoken third promise to the rest of the crew, that Zoro will always be there (provided he can, of course, find his way to them) in times of need, will protect and defend, and will also be the stern fatherly hand that guides the younger crew. He may not say a lot, but we know he cares.
Zoro: 2603...2604...2605...If I'd been able to cut through that wax, I wouldn't...have held everyone back! I’m weak...I must become stronger! Until I can slash through stuff like that wax in any stance!

Zoro is also the one who pushes his nakama into being the people he knows they can be. While his methods are often brusque and at times critical or harsh, what he is saying rings true. It’s fairly hard to explain this, because in my head Zoro’s behavior to his nakama makes a lot of sense, and yet makes him seem like he doesn’t care. He likes to play the Devil’s advocate, especially in the Water 7/Enies Lobby arc, and sometimes I think he just gets tired of some of the bullshit his nakama will pull. But he’s that way for a reason. He’s rough and demanding, because as one of the more mature, forward-looking crewmembers who knows what it’s like to live life fighting every day, he knows life on the open seas will be rough and demanding. And rather than let his nakama be hurt or killed by future enemies or their own shortcomings, there’s this sense that he’d rather be the one making them face up to their lies or problems, helping them (in true Zoro fashion) to get stronger, or if they’re incapable of it, then Zoro will step in and shoulder that burden.
Chopper: AH! Zoro wandered off somewhere while we weren’t looking! WAIT UP, ZORO, THAT’S NOT THE WAY!
Nami: I said the staircase! How could you possibly go the wrong way?! Are you a fantasista?!
Zoro: Shut up! Your explanation was bad!

No matter how much his bounty grows, how many Marines quake at the sound of his name, or how many crazy swordsmen like himself crazy strong villains he fights, Zoro will always be the one who thought that going north meant going up in a building. It’s a good think the Straw Hats have Zoro. He’s a strong fighter, a good ally, a sturdy shield to hide behind (or wrap around, especially his head, if you’re Chopper) and a loyal friend. It’s a good thing Zoro has the Straw Hats. If he ever left, within two seconds, he’d be utterly lost and he’s far too stubborn to ask for directions.

All that wistful longing and trapped emotions, Nami’s first song is for her time at Arlong Park because Arlong Park was the arc that taught us fans of fansubs the word nakama it was a damn good arc. And so we touch on the side of Nami that’s not really seen anymore, because she’s finally free to do what she wants.
Nami: Doctorine. Would you mind making our crew's recovery, say, free? And also, would you mind releasing me now?

A song for Usopp starting on his own journey, or conversely a song for Usopp in general as he can be rather unsure when it comes to his place in the crew. The song's more of a testament to Usopp's strength, that even when he's freaked out and wants to run, he'll still stand and fight for his nakama.
Usopp: Hmmm, what should I say? Maybe I should go like, “Oh, that jerk? He got away!" Nah, that’ll never fly, will it?

The verses don’t really fit, but there are such perfect lines I had to use it. Usopp really is the best at vocally expressing just what the bond of nakama costs, because he feels his own shortcomings so painfully sharp in contrast to how he perceives the strength of his nakama. He also is able to recognize the courage that comes from fighting for nakama, and he knows what that costs too.
Usopp: It ain’t like it’s hell here!!! Don’t act like you’re about to die!!! Don’t make me worry too much, dammit!!

With a title like this, how could I not? Because Sanji’s a cook on a ship, and the entire crew is reliant on his knowledge of nutrition and his skill in the kitchen. Momma Straw Hat at his finest, taking care of his beautiful angels and all of the other shitty charges. I think it’s one of the greatest things about Sanji. He has such a dirty mouth and is so abusive to the other guys without a second thought, yet there’s always the boys’ portions of special treats in the kitchen. And Sanji takes his job seriously as one of the adults on board responsible for everyone else's health.
Zoro: If you can't even protect your captain, then you can't protect your ambitions either. Luffy is the man who will become the Pirate King!!!
Sanji: ...Hold on a second, you shitty bastard.........What're you gonna do if you die...?!! Hah...!! What about your ambition...idiot!!

And watch me be blantantly San->Zo XD But honestly I don’t mean for this song to reflect any Sanji pairing, more to reflect Sanji and his relation to his crew. Another song I keep batting about in my head, because tonally (if that's a word >.>) it doesn’t feel like it fits Sanji. The song’s sentiment, however, does, because like the others, Sanji's also looking out for everyone on the crew. He’s so very willing to throw himself into danger to save his nakama (or, even back before he joined the Strawhats, willing to die for the Baratie). Granted, this is true for most of the crew, but Sanji fails the most at it. And yet he consistently keeps trying to stop his nakama from being hurt while trying to look cool doing it and getting trounced for his troubles. It's almost like he values his nakama and their dreams more than his own life, and he doesn't get enough credit for the attempts he does make.

Hands up if Chopper’s arc and nakama joining still makes you all woobly and gooey inside. I have about three or four songs that I feel fit in here, and I’m not entirely happy with some parts of the song. But overall, the song is definitely Straw Hats -> Chopper: complete acceptance and warm welcome for the little uncertain reindeer, so used to being scorned and feared.
Chopper: Everyone! I *sob* I don’t want this! I started sailing with you guys…Luffy! Luffy asked me…I only went because Luffy asked! I don’t want to join these people!

Chopper at his most earnest, which is also pretty adorable, and his desire to be as dependable, courageous and stoic as his nakama. A truly noble desire, and if he only wasn’t so gosh darn cute then someone other than the Straw Hats might take him seriously. Fifty beli bounty for the win :D

Even though he’s the youngest, as ship doctor, Chopper carries an incredible weight (and a fantastic chance to nag the hell out of his male nakama, for all they’ll listen). And while he may forget himself and scream for a doctor whenever one of his charges gets injured, he’s always there to undo the damage others do to his nakama (or that they do to each other). So he gets an overused doctor-ish type song. It’s almost perfect though, because there is an earnest drive and willingness to this song, while acknowledging that possibility and fear of failure, which is so Chopper.

Robin at the beginning of her time on the Merry, when there was still a distance maintained by Robin and missed or ignored by everyone (except maybe Zoro, suspicious bastard that he is). This song is Robin’s sense of "not-you" when she first joined the crew, and how she slowly, almost unconsciously, begins to drop those walls and relax.

But Franky changes from the masked fiend/terror of Water 7 into a genuine nice-guy (well, as nice as a criminal can be, anyway XD). Attracted just as Iceburg and Kokoro are to that special Straw Hat brand of insanity, Franky fights alongside the Straw Hats to rescue their nakama. With this song, I was trying to go for that half-acceptance of Franky by every Straw Hat, from Usopp defending Franky to Sanji on Puffing Tom, to all of Franky’s interactions with Robin, to Nami entrusting Chopper and Luffy entrusting Robin to him. Franky told Luffy that they could count on him, and while at the time Luffy was far from pleased, we’ve seen that Franky’s willingness to fight changes everyone’s opinions about him.
Sanji: The situation’s getting worse!
Zoro: Your grandpa’s come back, Luffy! They already took the offensive in the coast over there and are looking for us!

This FST has been two years in the making and I wish I was kidding when I say that. But it’s true. It’s undergone a few transformations since I tried to tweak it for Family Month way back when. I hadn’t managed to finish it in time for that theme BUT IT’S DONE NOW AND THAT’S WHAT MATTERS AMIRITE?
I love One Piece dearly, that’s fairly obvious. But unlike some of the larger anime fandoms, FSTs are rare in our fandom (except for this month. Rock on, abarero!), and so I wanted to contribute. But instead of doing individual character FSTs, I wanted to do a FST that focused on a huge theme in One Piece: nakama. And in particular the Straw Hat nakama because that’s the one I know the most about :3.
In One Piece, nakama essentially is family. Ever since this word’s been mentioned it’s become one of those "pressure words"; you don’t treat this term lightly, nor do you mock the bond it refers to. Pirates generally treat the word with respect; with some pirate crews, nakama-killing is a crime worthy of death. On the other hand, there are also pirate captains who could care less for their nakama and are quite willing to massacre their own crews to further their goals. And it's not just pirates who feel this important bond. Most recently, shipwrights, archaeologists and marines have also used the word, talking about this stronger familial bond instead of the generic definition.
Ultimately, the nakama bond is as strong as or stronger than a family bond. You live and die for your nakama and their dreams, and they do the same for you. Some of the Straw Hats have left behind cherished friends and family members to be on this crew, so the people on board have to be pretty special. It’s one of the things I love about the series is how much everyone is willing to sacrifice for this bond. The characters also aren't swallowed by this bond. Every member of the Straw Hat crew remains an individual, chasing his or her own dream, while simultaneously carrying the others forward to their own dreams.
Now some technical stuff. This FST’s set up sort of…odd. Basically I wanted to put in songs that solely reflected a character’s emotions towards his or her nakama (either from a specific scene or from a period of time, like the course of a story arc). But I also wanted to have songs that reflected the crew as a whole, their general attitude towards life and towards each other. So there are three songs for each crew member, followed by a nakama-related song, which are generally applicable to every Straw Hat. There are also quotes for each individual-specific song (and explanations, because if you haven’t guessed already I am long-winded) which for the most part reflect the song they precede. You decide if I succeeded. And yes, I’ll confess, I copped out a bit and used two songs from the series’ OSTs. FST-noob, I know *hangs head* But they worked so well! I almost used "Sail On" by Mastplan too. I’m so unoriginal ;_;

Substitute "pirate" for "spaceman" and it works better :D Luffy never cares about his crews’ pasts; rather he judges them on how he sees them and on their actions (or reactions) to different situations. And there is something upbeat and accepting about this song, almost simplistic in its willingness to follow a crazy dream. Just like Luffy.
Luffy: Of course I don’t know a damn thing about swords, you dumbass!
Usopp: Wha…what’s he talking about?
Luffy: I don’t know how to navigate, either. I can’t cook. I can’t even lie!

The first to admit how much he relies on his nakama to help him, Luffy is such an easy-going guy when it comes to who is on his crew. He pretty much is a love-at-first-sight, meeting people for the first time and deciding right then that they’re his nakama now. The other person has pretty much no say in the matter. For a while, it seemed Luffy was broken of this habit of asking-first: he says he hates Robin the first time the Straw Hats meet her, and even after fighting Franky he still holds a grudge for what Franky did to Usopp. But with the Thriller Bark Arc, it seems Luffy’s back to normal. Or he just thinks having a skeleton or zombie on his crew would be cool. Either or XD Hopefully the others will stop Luffy from filling the Thousand Sunny with hundreds of zombies liberated from Thriller Bark although Brooke can stay :D
Luffy: I’m no good. If I stay the way I am now, I won’t be any good. After I was defeated by Aokiji, I started thinking about it…If there are any more strong guys like him in the ocean ahead of us, then I have to be stronger…because otherwise I can’t protect my nakama!! I have nakama who’re not strong…but I still want them to be with me! So I have to be stronger than anybody else…or I’ll lose them all!

The others also rely on Luffy to be captain, leader and protector, the one to take on the strongest fighters, the greatest threats to their survival. Although he’s not the brightest, and willing to ignore very large dangers for the mere chance of an adventure, Luffy is quick to defend his nakama against any threat, real or imagined, and is very perceptive when it comes to saying and doing exactly the right thing to make a situation better (usually, this involves beating someone up, so I may be giving him too much credit, but since this is a shonen manga about pirates on a sea where strength talks, beating someone up usually is the best course to solving a problem). He doesn’t really need a reason to fight for his nakama, either. They’re nakama, and if someone hurts them, that’s all the reason Luffy needs. Also, I’m a sucked for puns. Of course he’s not made of steel, he’s made of rubber! *is shot*

Oh, look at me pun. Two promises rule Zoro’s life: his promise to Kuina and his promise to Luffy. But there seems to be this unspoken third promise to the rest of the crew, that Zoro will always be there (provided he can, of course, find his way to them) in times of need, will protect and defend, and will also be the stern fatherly hand that guides the younger crew. He may not say a lot, but we know he cares.
Zoro: 2603...2604...2605...If I'd been able to cut through that wax, I wouldn't...have held everyone back! I’m weak...I must become stronger! Until I can slash through stuff like that wax in any stance!

Zoro is also the one who pushes his nakama into being the people he knows they can be. While his methods are often brusque and at times critical or harsh, what he is saying rings true. It’s fairly hard to explain this, because in my head Zoro’s behavior to his nakama makes a lot of sense, and yet makes him seem like he doesn’t care. He likes to play the Devil’s advocate, especially in the Water 7/Enies Lobby arc, and sometimes I think he just gets tired of some of the bullshit his nakama will pull. But he’s that way for a reason. He’s rough and demanding, because as one of the more mature, forward-looking crewmembers who knows what it’s like to live life fighting every day, he knows life on the open seas will be rough and demanding. And rather than let his nakama be hurt or killed by future enemies or their own shortcomings, there’s this sense that he’d rather be the one making them face up to their lies or problems, helping them (in true Zoro fashion) to get stronger, or if they’re incapable of it, then Zoro will step in and shoulder that burden.
Chopper: AH! Zoro wandered off somewhere while we weren’t looking! WAIT UP, ZORO, THAT’S NOT THE WAY!
Nami: I said the staircase! How could you possibly go the wrong way?! Are you a fantasista?!

No matter how much his bounty grows, how many Marines quake at the sound of his name, or how many crazy swordsmen like himself crazy strong villains he fights, Zoro will always be the one who thought that going north meant going up in a building. It’s a good think the Straw Hats have Zoro. He’s a strong fighter, a good ally, a sturdy shield to hide behind (or wrap around, especially his head, if you’re Chopper) and a loyal friend. It’s a good thing Zoro has the Straw Hats. If he ever left, within two seconds, he’d be utterly lost and he’s far too stubborn to ask for directions.

The verses don’t really fit, but there are such perfect lines I had to use it. Usopp really is the best at vocally expressing just what the bond of nakama costs, because he feels his own shortcomings so painfully sharp in contrast to how he perceives the strength of his nakama. He also is able to recognize the courage that comes from fighting for nakama, and he knows what that costs too.

With a title like this, how could I not? Because Sanji’s a cook on a ship, and the entire crew is reliant on his knowledge of nutrition and his skill in the kitchen. Momma Straw Hat at his finest, taking care of his beautiful angels and all of the other shitty charges. I think it’s one of the greatest things about Sanji. He has such a dirty mouth and is so abusive to the other guys without a second thought, yet there’s always the boys’ portions of special treats in the kitchen. And Sanji takes his job seriously as one of the adults on board responsible for everyone else's health.

And watch me be blantantly San->Zo XD But honestly I don’t mean for this song to reflect any Sanji pairing, more to reflect Sanji and his relation to his crew. Another song I keep batting about in my head, because tonally (if that's a word >.>) it doesn’t feel like it fits Sanji. The song’s sentiment, however, does, because like the others, Sanji's also looking out for everyone on the crew. He’s so very willing to throw himself into danger to save his nakama (or, even back before he joined the Strawhats, willing to die for the Baratie). Granted, this is true for most of the crew, but Sanji fails the most at it. And yet he consistently keeps trying to stop his nakama from being hurt while trying to look cool doing it and getting trounced for his troubles. It's almost like he values his nakama and their dreams more than his own life, and he doesn't get enough credit for the attempts he does make.

But overall, the song is definitely Straw Hats -> Chopper: complete acceptance and warm welcome for the little uncertain reindeer, so used to being scorned and feared.

Even though he’s the youngest, as ship doctor, Chopper carries an incredible weight (and a fantastic chance to nag the hell out of his male nakama, for all they’ll listen). And while he may forget himself and scream for a doctor whenever one of his charges gets injured, he’s always there to undo the damage others do to his nakama (or that they do to each other). So he gets an overused doctor-ish type song. It’s almost perfect though, because there is an earnest drive and willingness to this song, while acknowledging that possibility and fear of failure, which is so Chopper.

But Franky changes from the masked fiend/terror of Water 7 into a genuine nice-guy (well, as nice as a criminal can be, anyway XD). Attracted just as Iceburg and Kokoro are to that special Straw Hat brand of insanity, Franky fights alongside the Straw Hats to rescue their nakama. With this song, I was trying to go for that half-acceptance of Franky by every Straw Hat, from Usopp defending Franky to Sanji on Puffing Tom, to all of Franky’s interactions with Robin, to Nami entrusting Chopper and Luffy entrusting Robin to him. Franky told Luffy that they could count on him, and while at the time Luffy was far from pleased, we’ve seen that Franky’s willingness to fight changes everyone’s opinions about him.

Basically, when I started this, Brooke hadn’t even been introduced and after slap-dashing around to find songs for Franky, I couldn’t and wouldn’t do it again. Since I’m still not entirely happy with the whole thing, maybe in a month or two I’ll do an updated version or something, to include any loveable skeletons that may have joined in the meantime.

The title of the FST is from the Beatles' "All Together Now", but I couldn't find anywhere for the song to fit perfectly. So I'm putting it here. Consider this an edit to the bonus? This is not in the zip, however. I like the 42 tracks. Meaning of life, the universe and everything, you know :P
