More Space Rocks-related Feels

Steven Universe is back on the 4th - yay! Suddenly going on hiatus, right in the middle of an important character arc, was a bit hard on the fans :) On the other hand, the show looks like they're going to exceed expectations again - judging by the previous episodes, it seemed as though the next one would be Garnet and Peridot interacting, and instead we're getting an info dump and the story of how Sapphire and Ruby first met - double yay!

But then, the show has a gift for exceeding fan expectations, and feeding us just enough info to keep us speculating wildly - just look at the previous arcs - Season 1B, for example.

The Homeworld finding a way back to Earth was enough to send two of the gems into a screaming panic, and the mounting dread for the rest of the season was more than justified - the Crystal Gems got completely curbstomped by one member of the Homeworld brute squad, armed with a single example of more recent gem technology. And then there was the Cluster - fans have been wondering about that since it was mentioned in Jailbreak. Was the Geode the Cluster? Or the gem mutants? And then the start of the Peredemption arc proved that the situation is much, much worse.

On an unrelated note, I've been thinking about what constitutes the Steven Universe ur-plot, at least as exemplified by an episode like Steven and the Stevens.

Steven and/or the Crystal Gems go on a mission regarding some relic of the Gem Rebellion. Amusing shenanigans ensue - in this case, Steven gets hold of a time machine and uses it to create a boy band, of himself and three time clones. Escalate to a scene of hi-octane nightmare fuel - Steven gets to watch 30 odd time-clones of himself disintegrate screaming. Close with a joke.

Alternatively there's the character-based episodes, half of which revolve around how badly losing Rose Quartz has affected the rest of the characters. Many feels.
