The Last Unicorn

Watched The Last Unicorn the other night - unfortunately the DVD in question was clearly based on an Nth generation TV cut, which lead to characters facing off from just off the edges of the screen. That said, I'm glad I saw it. Beagle's novel is very highly regarded, and while I haven't read it I'm aware of how influential it's been. I really must check if we have copy around the house somewhere. Lines like "Cruel? Cruelty is a thing for mortals. So is kindness." are genuinely chilling. And I'm amused by things like the MLP finale for Season 4, where the last unicorn with any power faces off against a red bull-centaur.

But back to the actual movie - they brought in some Japanese animators and for some of the characters it really shows, but I was really impressed by the use of the Unicorn Tapestries (which Purrdence has seen, at the Cloisters Museum in NYC) and the medieval and Renaissance style backgrounds for a lot of the film.

As for the acting. I can't say Mia Farrow was the best choice - her singing was subpar - but Christopher Lee was awesome. Not least because King Haggard is such an awesome villain, one who has been completely broken by his pursuit of something intangible and unobtainable. Possibly the best-written and best-portrayed example of that kind of mental state I've ever seen.
