I've just spent the last three days trying to sew a Horrible coat for my son (age 5) to wear when he goes with friends to see Igor on Friday. I had just declared the project "Temporarily Canceled Because It Ate My Brain", but maybe I'll give it another shot tomorrow knpw that I know there's hope... Thanks for the post!
Good luck! I'm not sure how well this will scale down (this is an adult-size pattern), but if you can get the general shape right the principles are the same.

You might try Butterick 4314 or McCalls 4546 for the smaller children's sizes. I don't know if either of them are still in print, I got mine when the Matrix movies first came out (I have an extensive library of patterns, primarily historical but long coats... mmmmmm. And my kids love them too, ergo) but you should be able to pick them up on eBay.

I started off in spring with one of those (can't remember which). I was working on a Mad Scientist coat before Dr. Horrible came out, it happened to be just exactly what I was trying for. Unfortunately, my boy is a skinny size 5, and the smallest the pattern came in was a size 7. So, after a month and a half of spare-time work grading the pattern down to his measurements, I made my first full mock-up... and realized that the Matrix coat pattern is much more fitted and flaring than most lab coats are. Put something like that on a scrawny 5-year-old and he looked like he was wearing a dress. It was not good
( ... )
I actually had the pattern mostly figured out, it was the assembly that was giving me problems. I couldn't wrap my head around how to make the sleeve fit right, or how to attach the collar. Your advice to just use the original pattern sleeve reminded me to go look at sleeves on commercial patterns, and I realized I needed the top to be wider than the cuff. I sewed it together today, and he got to wear his Mad Scientist coat to see the opening of the movie Igor. I didn't quite have time to get the buttons in or the hem done, but what's a a few safety pins and a little extra length...
Thanks for the post!
