Happy Birthday Abi!! :)
Have a great day and hope you get all the presents (boxsets!) that you want!
Love you! Xx
Here are 3 Sanctuary ficlets for you!
~The Gift
What did one buy someone for the one hundred and fifty eighth birthday? You could hardly pop to the store and find a card announcing ‘Congratulations on your 158th birthday, hope there’s many more to come’. What could someone who had been alive for 158 years possibly want? It was unlikely that there was much that Helen Magnus wanted that she had not already purchased for herself or been given by someone else. The fact that she was also effectively his boss made it harder still to think of something original; something she would like and appreciate.
Perhaps he could pretend to forget, tell her that his card must have gotten lost in the mail? But no, that wouldn’t do, he owed Helen more than that. Will continued to trudge the streets, head bent against the cold breeze and his hands deep in the pockets of his grey hoodie as he waited for inspiration to strike. He was almost at the end of the rank of shops when he came across a quaint looking record store which he had never visited before.
Will pushed open the door, grateful to be out of the cold and made a bell tinkle overhead. He perused the surprisingly vast collection of music, so impressed by the variety that he almost forgot his reason for being there; almost. Will found what he was looking for within seconds of diving into the ‘U’ section.
He exited the store minutes later, the first edition copy of ‘The Joshua Tree’ tucked under his arm, whistling his favourite U2 songs. Now, he just hoped that Helen would appreciate the present; it was personal and he hoped it would convey his gratitude towards and his feelings, whatever they might be. If all else failed he was sure Ashley would like the gift.
~Against All Odds
Helen Magnus was falling apart.
This didn’t happen to her, she was reliably cool, sometimes to an icy degree, but she never lost control; lost her hold on her emotions. She always had a perfect handle on whatever situation she found herself in. Will often envied this side of her, wishing he could at least appear as detached and aloof as she could be at times. After working with her at the Sanctuary for almost a year, Will knew there was far more to the enigmatic Doctor Magnus than this but until today he had never seen her come undone.
Part of Helen’s strength came from one hundred and fifty seven years of life experience but even she hadn’t acknowledged how much she relied on the capabilities of her only daughter. The thought of losing her; losing her to evil was too much for Helen to even contemplate.
She wasn’t sure what she would have done without Will. Will who held her as she sobbed, her desperate tears finally escaping the dam she had so steadfastly built; who brewed her tea exactly as she liked it and promised, against all odds, that he would do anything to help bring Ashley Magnus back to the Sanctuary.
~The Sanctuary and The Dollhouse
Helen Magnus and Adelle DeWitt had known each other for a years, sharing a friendship that went far beyond posh British accents and a love for cups of tea. Adelle’s work before the Dollhouse had crossed in similar fields as Helen’s own research meaning that the two women had a great deal in common. This was part of the reason why Helen was so shocked when she had visited her friend in LA.
“Hello Helen, lovely to see you.” Adelle greeted, kissing her on both cheeks.
“Good to see you too, Addie.” Helen replied, taking a seat in Adelle’s bright, spacious office. “You’ve done well for yourself here,” She said, looking around. “But what exactly is it that you do here, Addie?”
As Adelle explained the function of the Dollhouse; the good, the bad and the seedy, Helen found it hard to hide her emotions.
“And no one knows what goes on here?” She asked, incredulous.
Adelle shook her head. “Only our clients and they have enough sense not to speak of the place.” She pursed her lips together. “And financial incentive of course.”
Helen smiled but it was humourless. The situation was ironic really, how similar the Sanctuary and the Dollhouse were yet how startlingly different they also were.
Conversation moved to more pleasant areas and the two old friends parted with promises to keep in touch. Once out, despite the blistering California afternoon, Helen shivered, longing for home and the sanctity of her Sanctuary.
