Facebook meme I felt like sharing over here in LJ land.
Think of the first 20 albums that had such a profound effect on you they changed your life. Dug into your soul. Music that brought you to life when you heard it. Royally affected you, kicked you in the wazzo, literally socked you in the gut, is what I mean. Make your list in order of your personal musical history, not your most to least important.
1. Guns n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction. The first real album I listened too as opposed to kid stuff like Raffi. I was probably 7 when I heard it.
2. Metallica - Metallica (Black Album). Fuckin, Enter Sandman. It was huge.
3. Nirvana - Nevermind. Absolute breath of fresh air. The album rocked and not in a metal "the dragon comes in the niiiiiiiiiight" kind of way. Seemed more genuine.
4. Alice in Chains - Dirt. I was a big fan of Layne Stanley's vocals. Dem Bones, Would? and Angry Chair are great songs.
5. Clerks Soundtrack (various). Alternative started getting really big and bands like Candlebox came out of the woodwork. I was starting to lose interest in music when my brother made me a copy of the Clerks soundtrack. All I really wanted was to listen to the song "Chewbacca" cause I thought it was funny... but there was one song that completely took me over. Leaders and Followers by Bad Religion
6. Bad Religion - The Grey Race. ...so I immediately went and bought this album. Still my favorite album of theirs, maybe all time. There's something just great about "walk"
7. Black Sabbath - Between Heaven and Hell. While I started to gravitate away from metal and towards punk, I still found myself really enjoying Ozzy era sabbath.
8. Deftones - Around the Fur. I guess this counts as nu-metal? I read an article about them in Guitar World (back when I played guitar). Bought the album and fell in love with "Be Quiet and Drive (far away)"
9. Deftones - White Pony. "Fuck Nu-Metal, we want to sound more like the Cure." Still a fantastic album.
10. Tool - Aenema. Maynard is a genius. See also....
11. A Perfect Circle - Mer de Noms. Most loved album I own. There's a lot of emotion tied to this album because of my wife. If we have a song, its "3 Libras."
12. Idlewild - The Remote Part. Buddy of mine from college turned me on to this band. I remain to this day completely surprised that "A Modern Way of Letting Go" wasn't this decades "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
13. Against Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose. I don't think another album has ever affected me the way this one did. It remains the best punk album I have ever heard. I don't care how big a sellout the band has become, I will go see them live and sing till my voice gives.
14. Ramones - Ramones. I had a bunch of their live albums before I ever bought any of there studio albums. I'm not sure how that happened.
15. The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette. The Damned were better than the Clash and the Sex Pistols. There, I said it. It is out there and can't be taken back.
16. The Smiths - Best of Vol 1. At some point I discovered the Smiths. Morissey can sing.
17. The Cure - Disintegration. Great album for when you're depressed and want to feel worse.
18. Kid Dynamite - Shorter Faster Louder. Melodic hardcore at its best. I have "death and taxes" printed out at my cube to demoralize myself.
19. Bouncing Souls - How I Spent My Summer Vacation. Punk can be fun and poppy without sucking? What a concept!
20. The Ergs! - Upstairs/Downstairs. I'm glad I got to see these guys live.
21. Gaslight Anthem - Sink or Swim. Ok, seriously New Jersey? Do you have a monopoly on awesome punk bands? Is there something in the water?
22. Pixies - Doolittle. It's the Pixies and they rock.
23. The Unlovables - Crush, Boyfriend, Heartbreak. Girl fronted Pop Punk and its best. Mikey from the Ergs! plays drums.
24. The Flight of the Conchords. Hi-larious!
25. Gaslight Anthem - '59 Sound. More Springsteen than punk, but still one hundred percent awesome.
