Game point Vs Don't Hate The Player

Mr. So Much More than Unsigned Hype (S-Pomp) took a break from writing about his REAL LIFE experiences to leave me a pretty interesting comment. By interesting I mean he left me crazy rant, filled with claims that had the insane levels of a wrestling promo from the 80’s. In fact, when I read it I imagined him saying in crazy brightly colored spandex (no homo). Anyway here’s the comment, complete with random comments from me (MS Paint FTW).

Despite all the craziness (like S-Pomp made the Y-Town Hip-hop scene), there is one thing I kind of found interesting. He said that Da Kreek’s Game Point was a direct bite (aka: copy) off of his Don’t Hate The Player. I’m not one to just take someone’s word for something. I did some exploration for my self, to see if S(I Got a Std Shoulda just used my plam) Pomp was telling the truth. I’ve uploaded both songs and I will be judging by 2 categories, production and lyrics, to see who bit who.

Here are the 2 songs in question

Production

Production is 60% of what a rap song is. Good production is the difference between crappy rapper like Soulja Boy and a crappy rapper like Lil’ Wayne. I will be checking between these two song to decide if there is any biting going on.

The musical production for Game point is a very crunchy sample from a Sonic boss level(?). It is pretty dark sounding and slow. It really fits Mellow Dee’s flow nicely. I personally would have used a more distorted snare, but that’s just me.

S-Pomp’s musical landscape sounds a bit dated. Not dated in a “Lets blast Rakim’s follow the leader” way, but a “remember when James Brown stopped using a live band and started using cheep key boards” way. Everything about this track says “I used my keyboard to make beats.” Synths are incredibly untextured, the snare drum is really awkward, and what’s up with the moaning chick? The upside to this is that it is all in key.

Verdict: Uhhh, no biting in the beat department.

Lyrics

Lyrics are probably 40% of a good rap song. Rappers like Krs-one, Gza, and LL-Cool-J (don’t front) all have songs with legendary lyrics. Now I will be comparing the lyrics between both songs.

Da Kreek’s song keeps it simple. The two Townsend boys go on about how they pick up chicks. Similes about video games are peppered through out this song. My favorite one is “Now she call you Sam Fisher cause you bout to splinter cell.”

S-Pomp’s song is about… Well it’s about how he’s has lots of sex, and by lots I mean I fully expect him to reading this on his lap top mounted on a girl’s back. After he’s had sex according to the song he “rolls out like a boot leg.” There are a lot of similes in this song as well, but S-Pomps similes are more about sports figures and cows. S-Pomp even makes up an acronym for PIMP. “S.P.O.M.P.’s a P.I.M.P Penis In Many Pussies Perfection Is My Passion,” man that’s classy

Verdict: The only similarity could be using similes about competitive activities when talking about girls. If I were to count that, I would also have to count the fact that Too $hort, Ice T, Mac Dre, Dan The Automater, The Loop Troop and 105,000,000 people have all made a song titled Don’t Hate The Player before S-Pomp. So, when a concept has been done so many times, you really can’t say anyone is biting.

In closing I would like to say that if Da Kreek was biting S-pomp it was probably by accident. Similarities happen when you are kind of talking about the same subject. I just find it hard to believe anyone would listen to the S-Pomp song and actually say “I wana sound like that.”

In S-pomp's defense: He has a lot of better songs than this. It’s not his best, and probably the worst song on the cd, but his cd is still worth a listen.
