Challenge 8 - Steal the Scene
Title: Popcorn and Fear

Summary: A quiet night in goes bad
INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
AMANDA sits on the sofa, her legs curled up and the cat sitting next to her. Her calm eyes are fixed on the television. KATE sits in the chair her knees drawn up to her chest and she looks afraid.
On the television screen we see a woman running through a darkened wood being chased by an unseen growling beast, the woman trips and the creature gains on her.
Amanda’s phone BEEPS indicating a new message which makes both girls jump.
Looking down at the screen Amanda sighs;
AMANDA
(Frustrated and disappointed)
Great
Her phone screen shows the text message ‘Running late’ and she presses pause on the remote control before looking at her friend.
AMANDA (CONT’D)
The guys are late
KATE
Damn. Fancy popcorn?
AMANDA
Good idea, I’m starving
AMANDA
At least we’ll see the end of the movie before they get here.
KATE
(Unenthusiastically)
Yeah brilliant
AMANDA
(Laughs)
Scene cuts to later on, same room but half a bowl of popcorn has been eaten, there are two almost empty wine glasses on the table and Kate is hiding behind a cushion.
AMANDA
That was a good movie
KATE
(whimpers)
AMANDA
Thank you for watching with me
KATE
Never again
SLAM a door bangs and both girls jump before laughing.
AMANDA
Sounds like the boys are here
KATE
(shouts)
Dinner is in the oven, you guys can dish up. Oh and bring more wine
AMANDA
(laughs)
Good plan
KATE
(shrugs)
Well they were late, we can make them do a bit of work
CRASH from downstairs that makes the girls roll their eyes
AMANDA
Damnit
(shouts)
How about trying not to destroy the kitchen?
KATE
(Teasing)
How happy are you not to have neighbours to disturb?
AMANDA
(Laughs)
It is one of the best things about living in the middle of nowhere.
NOISE as Amanda’s mobile buzzes indicating a call, she moves over to pick it up.
AMANDA
(voice gets steadily more alarmed as call progresses)
What did you break?...What do you mean when? Just now, downstairs...Stop jerking around?...Seriously, stop it...Well if you aren’t then who’s...
KATE
What’s wrong?
AMANDA
It’s the boys, they say they’ve been held up by an accident and it’ll be at least twenty minutes until they get here.
BLACK as the power goes out, lights and tv turn off and the girls scream as they hear footsteps on the stairs.
