We're getting prepared for our epic drive north on Wednesday.  Last Friday, I removed the rear driveshaft from the Jeep to have it balanced, because it exhibited an annoying vibration ever since my ill-fated adventure on the East side of Sloan Peak, November 2006 . I'm not really sure how, but something tweaked the rear drive shaft and it hasn't been the same since.  I picked up the freshly balanced shaft yesterday, complete with two rather beefy, welded-on steel balancing discs and new u-joints. I will know if the balancing was a success only after I re-install it and take a test drive.  I also purchased a new set of tires on Saturday, Mickey Thompson MTZ's http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/truck.php?item=BajaMTZRadial in case we encounter excessive snow depths.  I also had a little larger tire installed for more ground clearance.  I have to take a drive with  my GPS to see how much the speedometer is off.  It used to register a little slow, so there is a chance that It's about right now that I have a larger diameter tire, and thus a higher effective gear ratio.

With four wheel drive, I can get around with no rear driveshaft by running in four wheel drive, thus turning the intact front drive system. Jeeps were not meant to be front wheel drive vehicles. It's an odd sensation, and the u-joints are not constant velocity as they are in a typical front drive system.  As my friend Patrick said, "It feels like we're riding in some kind of chariot."

Anyhow, I have an analysis package to complete before I leave next week, so no more distractions.
