And I feel ill.
I am appalled, stunned, enraged and sickened by the overwhelming ineptness of the Bush administration. When word came that Katrina had reached Class 5 status and was scheduled to hit New Orleans dead on, what preparations were made? What food and water was stockpiled and made ready to hit the street the second the winds died down? Where are all the safe-havens for the now homeless thousands? The health care for the elderly and infirm? How can President Bush stop for photos when babies are dying of dehydration and heat exhaustion?? It makes me cry! (And I'm not a crying person.)
How can the US government be so calloused, telling the people to be patient and wait for help to come to them? Don't they get it?? The people are dying! And all I can do is watch the news, pray and send the Red Cross my measly donations. The government is responsible for the safety and wellbeing of its citizens, and they have dropped the ball in the biggest and most disgusting way possible.
Geraldo Rivera and Sheppard Smith reporting live from New Orleans - the first Political Crap-less report I've seen. And what's with the gas price hikes? The gas shortage hasn't hit the market, and likely won't for at least six months, more likely a year. How can we justify a jump of thirty cents a liter? We're up to $1.35/L (that's about $6.08/Canadian gallon - and a Canadian gallon is larger than an American one). Because of the cost of gas, we've had to cancel our family vacation to visit my husband's grandparents. We just can't afford to fill the van - we didn't budget for $500 worth of gas for a week's vacation.
And, on a more personal note, I think a mouse has crawled into our ductwork and died. There's a very foul aroma wafting out of our cold air return vents, and literally dozens of flies exiting the duct. It smells so awful, I've had to get out my PartyLite AromaMelt - so far, it's winning the War of the Smells. If my husband can't find the source of the bad smell by dismantling the ducts tomorrow, we're going to have to have our vents flushed - another bill we hadn't counted on.
At least I still have a home, my family is safe and healthy and I can do what I can for those less-fortunate.
God be with you, Americans.
