A Very Awkward Christmas

Christmas at the Kirke house had been dull the last few years. Growing up Drew and his family would stay with family - but his father's family. When he left that tradition, along with many others, disappeared. They were forced to make new traditions and celebrate in different ways. But by then, at age eleven, it didn't feel right.

Drew was almost dreading this Christmas. He didn't want anymore change in his life. He was happy with the small, intimate dinner with the occasional aunt or uncle popping in (literally). It was different but he had finally grown accustom to it.

Now, this year, there were two more plates on the table. His mother had pulled out the fine china and the fancy table cloth. For the first time in many years, she spent the entire day in the kitchen fussing back and forth.

"Well, this blows," Amanda mumbled, walking up behind Andrew.

"When did you get such a dirty mouth?" Drew looked at his sister with a serious look on his face.

"A lot has changed since you left, big brother." The young girl rolled her eyes, straighten out her red sweater, and then plastered a big fake smile on her face. Clearly she was used to putting on a show. And this worried Drew. He had no idea what was in store.
