Last Night

Dear Journal,

Instead of being normal this evening, I did my own thing. Everyone went to the football game and I rather regert not going. I should support East more. In any case, I wasted time before dropping my sister off at a friend’s house. I cannot stand it when she doesn’t know where her friends live but expect s me to know. Soured my mood. But, I was cheered up when I went to Newman to see an art exhibit with ‘the colors of Tiffany.’ It’s in response to the Wichita Art Museum’s current exhibit of Tiffany lamps. Tonight was Final Friday, in case you were wondering. I saw Mrs. Jones at Newman and Mrs. Waters was there since she had 6 pieces up. It was nice seeing her but you can’t talk but for a few minutes before someone else steals her away. She knows so many people in the art community. Anyway, I also saw Mrs. Ender for a few minutes just as she was leaving.

Then, I went to Lucinda’s, Museyum, and City Arts. I bought this book about creative inspiration by Julia Cameron. Usually I think that stuff is a bunch of bull shit but I have another one of her books and it’s amazing. When I did was I was supposed to, I had a million more creative ideas than I ever thought possible. It’s called The Vein of Gold. I wonder when I’ll find time to read it. Both stores are pretty individual and awesome. I’m really glad I decided to stop into City Arts because I found my new favorite local artist, Patrick Duegaw. He had four pieces at City Arts. Both were self portraits for $8,500 a piece but worth every penny and then some. One was a single piece and the other self-portrait was a 6’ x 3’ painting with two smaller pieces to the side. Anyway, he uses a ton of lacquer on top of his paintings. The frames are really wide and similarly lacquered. It was like one frame cut in half, painted two different colors, distressed, and loosely put back together. Really interesting construction of frames. Additionally, he didn’t paint on canvas but slices of about 1” thick wood that he fit together like a jigsaw with basic wedges and trapezoids. The paintings themselves were loose. A quick sketch was done, then a more completely drawing the next time. There were about half a dozen layers for outlines. Not much shading except for the detailed faces. Some of the wood was recessed further than others. It’s so hard to describe but so incredibly beautiful. I want the square self-portrait of himself sitting on the ground, his left leg obscuring most of his torso, him holding a paint brush and gazing out at the viewer with the “eye of a herbavore.” That had something to do with title. Just exquisite work, really. Apparently he’s connected with the Fischhaus too. So, I went by there but they didn’t have any of his work up. I went to The Fiber studio where I got to see four Patrick Duegaw drawings. Beautiful, but over priced at $600 at the very least for a pen and ink drawing. They were marvelous, but overpriced. Maybe you bargain with him on prices or something. I’ll be on the look-out for more of his work, that much is for sure.

I filled up on the way home, even though I had half a tank. I came home and tried to watch Everwood while eating a leftover quesodilla Mom made last night. I recorded it. But because cable is stupid it would go randomly to black and white and there wouldn’t be sound. So, I stopped. Then I worked on my Provence powerpoint for French class for a while. I get to use a bunch of good pictures from my trip. I did my physics homework online earlier though I still need to read the handout and redo a lab. On the topic of homework, I need to seriously work in my sketchbook, catch up majorly in Euro, PSAT, A Doll’s House journals (I want them all done by Monday), calculus bookwork, and I’m sure there are other things I could scrounge up. Like starting to do things for Group IV analysis.

Today didn’t feel like Friday to me. I would have done another day of school, which is quite surprising I think. I’m in love with the weather and I think I’ll wear a sweater Monday?

I made reservations for 11 at Adrian’s for 7:00 tomorrow. I’m picking up Nina at 6 so we can do pictures there, then do pictures at Bradley Fair fountain with the group and then eat dinner. Then go to… homecoming!!! Yay. I’m so excited, you can’t even imagine. Gosh. Less than 20 hours before I leave to pick up Nina! I hope the Mediterranean food is good. I haven’t had much experience with it.

It sucks no one is online. My fault for being a loser! Maybe I’ll go watch Runaway Jury. I’ve been meaning to do that for some time now. I should have taken photographs downtown tonight. Next month. I’ve run out of things to say and I shan’t ramble any more.

Love,
Drew
