From the Docks to the Isle of IKEA, Wednesday Afternoon

Feb 08, 2012 06:22

Long ago in days of yore, it all began with a god named Thor...okay, on Wednesday afternoon, Anna stood on the dock and waited for the arrival of the others who were going (along with anyone else who wanted to show up; this was hardly a private trip) and a shuttle-longboat from the Isle of Ikea. She'd cashed in her first paychecks from the Devil's ( Read more... )

where: the docks, where: not a bodega not a mall

Welcome to the Isle of Ikea! Billy the bookcase says hello! (And so does the table, his name is Ingo. The chair is a ladderback birch, but his friends call him Karl.) Shop away!

In retrospect, Stacey realized, this was probably a bad idea. She had a credit card and she didn't have to pay the bill and it was so easy to look at things and think it was really a good bargain even if she didn't need a new bed or whatever.

So when she found the section of things like lamps and candles and things that weren't actually furniture, it just made things so much easier. She was spending way too much time looking at the framed photography, thinking her side of the room could stand to be sophisticated up a bit.

Kenzi stopped next to her and tilted her head, looking at the photos. "Audrey or Amsterdam?"

"Audrey," Stacey said after a moment's consideration. "It's just more sophisticated."

She was a sucker for that kind of thing if anyone couldn't tell by now.

"She does go with everything," Kenzi observed, with a tiny smirk. "And retro is in." She leaned closer to the photos of European cities. "Think I might get one of these myself, though. Something to shoot for."

"Got big plans for Europe?" Stacey asked.

"Former teacher used to tell stories about it," Kenzi said, thinking of Mr. Caffrey. "Rome and Paris and stuff. Always sounded pretty awesome. Lots to do--" And steal! "--there."

"I can see that," she said thoughtfully. "I think I'm more for busier cities, though."

"Anna said you were from New York?" Kenzi asked, looking at another one of the photos. "Any magic crap, or superheroes there, or just... normal cool New York?"

Stacey still looked a little weirded out to hear things about magic and superheroes. She still hadn't exactly decided that was all real.

"Just normal cool New York," she answered. "Though it seems like everyone's from there here..."

"Or Canada," Kenzi agreed. "Didn't expect to find so many of us in Maryland. I guess there used to even be a Mountie. Are you liking the island so far? Even with creepy dolls?" Like the one Anna adopted, eek.

"It's okay. The boys are cute," she said, "which is a huge plus when there are creepy dolls around."

The creepy dolls were not okay. Ever. But pretty made it better.

"Yes there are!" Kenzi had to agree on that. "Seifer and Toby and Sam and Lex and Ben Skywalker's pretty cute and you know, the teachers aren't hard on the eyes either."

Anna had actually modified her plan once she got into the store. She'd started with some sheets and a basic pillow, but then as she looked at items and did budget math, she realized she didn't need a bed like other people had. She could use it as a daybed! So instead of a duvet, she was buying several colorful throw pillows, along with a simple bedspread, a fluffy blanket, and a green throw that was dirt cheap even by 1958 standards. Basically she was planning to create herself a little lounging nest.

Her cart was already pretty full when she found herself contemplating whether she could afford a rug.

"Shiiiny," Kenzi said, from her place laying on a mattresss. "Love the purple."

"Everything is cheaper than I thought it would be," Anna reported.
