Tinnitus is quite annoying.

I had it for a couple of weeks a month ago, and now it's back again - both cases triggered by a cold. The doc says it's 'eustachian tube disorder', i.e. the tube gets blocked up/closed off, makes a slight pressure imbalance against my eardrum, which sets off the auditory nerve. It's not particularly loud and it's easy enough to mask, but any time it's vaguely quiet... it's there, like there's a TV next to my ear. Rrr. I sympathise with people who have to live with this permanently - before I got an assurance that it shouldn't (touch wood) be permanent, I went through a period of vague panic about it ("Why oh why did I listen to my earphones so loud") and spent quite a lot of time training myself to filter out/cope with it. It can be moved into the background with some practise, but I can see how it could be quite debilitating, especially if it was loud.

In other news, a fleet of Divers has joined the few solitary individuals who've been more permanent residents in the dock-waters here around Canary Wharf. I swear I've seen more than one dive and then not come up.. damned sneaky resurfacers, or large-lunged underwater trekkers. A family of swans have been making their stately rounds as well...
