Why? I mean, when
Emory's Middle Eastern Studies program so flourishes, must GSU's languish? They have Archaeology and the Bible and Magic and Witchcraft in the Ancient Mediterranean World. They have Readings in Judeo-Arabic texts! And classes on the Quran!
I feel like the poor child looking longingly in at the rich feasting in a well lit hall, grimy nose pressed to the glass as I shiver in Victorian London's winter fog. Charles Dickens could write stories about my life, and they'd be more cheerful than my actual existance. I mean, I get no Artful Dodger.
Seriously.
On the plus side, am getting the chance tomorrow to go listen to Jimmy Carter speak. There are plus sides.
(I wonder how hard it would be to transfer to Emory, seriously. I mean, I wanted to go there for grad school. Could I just skip out and go now? 130K of student debt isn't that big a deal!)
ETA:
Seriously, their intro class? Lists these as their required texts:
* G. Roux: Ancient Iraq
* S. Kramer: History Begins at Sumer
* S. Mitchell: Gilgamesh
* G. Leick : Mesopotamia---the Invention of the City
* A. Robinson: The History of Writing
* P.Marr: The Modern History of Iraq
I already have most of those. History of Writing? Check (it's fascinating, look it up), Gilgamesh? Dude, he and Enkidu were so ready to hook up and I'm pretty sure I'd Mitchell's translation. And they have Samual Noah Kramer listed!! KRAMER. He's my Middle Eastern History professor hero. Oh, my love for Dr. Kramer. If only he wasn't dead. And it's the 39 Firsts book! My favorite of his works!!
I so need to transfer to Emory. Honestly, this is just enough to bring tears to my eyes. Aaaargh.
Failing that, I think I need to add Roux, Marr, and Leick to my list of people to read. Roux I've flirted with, but the other two I'd not heard of and if they are in such otherwise august company, who am I to refuse?
(Seriously, if I had this opportunity, I could indulge my Sumerian history nerd and study the current political clime of the Middle East and learn Arabic, Hebrew and Sanskrit. Sanskrit! Oh, be still my heart.
