First Lines Music Meme: TEN YEARS OF ACL FEST EDITION

Sep 11, 2011 11:36

I have tuned out TV and radio today and am all about the music. Since the incredible heat has finally broken I am starting to get excited about ACL Fest this weekend (It's very hard to be excited about an outdoor music festival when you're on your 70th something day over 100˚F!). For the first time since the beginning of the festival, ten years ago, we did not manage to get tickets in the early lottery or during the few hour of general sales. Combine that with an extreme lack of discretionary funds and the fact that neither The Boy nor I could go on Friday (and MAN if you think he doesn't HATE the fact that he'll be marching in a football game half-time show right about the time Coldplay goes on, think again) and that Dave will be out of town all weekend at a board mtg and ... well - it's just Saturday for us. Never fear! We shall go forth and listen and dance and eat avocado Mighty Cones and drink Sweet Leaf Tea and report back here, as always.

In honor of the 10th anniversary of the Fest I have compiled a non-scientific list of songs from artists that have WOWed me at ACL (not a comprehensive list...that would take days)! Some are old favorites that put on memorable sets and some were fantastic surprises that grabbed me and left me reeling (and running off to buy their music!) Sadly, I did leave off a couple of those "discoveries" as too unlikely for anyone to guess - Gary Clark, Jr. (trust me he's gonna break big with this new album), Kelly Hunt (who just seems to be playing around Kansas City, but OMG!), Trombone Shorty (AMAZING, ALWAYS but hard to put lyrics up for), etc. So...I could do this ten times over and not run out of great artists but here's a sampling from the last ten years, in no particular order.

Guess song title and artist. Earn glory, good karma, and maybe a postcard. DL links to follow, eventually, so do check back. (OF COURSE you could google these, kinda defeats the purpose, play nice.)

ETA Pics of the remaining artists, does that help?

1. Vampire Weekend, A-Punk - sabriel75
Johanna drove slowly into the city
The Hudson River all filled with snow

2.  Fleet Foxes, Ragged Wood

Come down from the mountain, you have been gone too long
The spring is upon us, follow my ornate song

3. Lucinda Williams, Right in Time - blue_fjords

Not a day goes by I don't think about you
You left your mark on me it's permanent a tattoo
Pierce the skin and the blood runs through

4. Mike Farris, Can't No Grave Hold My Body Down
It was early one mornin' Just about the break of day
The angels came in glory And rolled the stone, stone away

O.M.G. Mike Farris is amazing and explosive and he rocked my world two years ago to such a degree that I left the set, walked straight across the Fest, and bought his CD from the Waterloo Records tent. It remains the ONLY CD I have ever purchased AT THE FEST.  He's great solo but check him out with the Roseland Rhythm, Revue...Memphis it up, Baby!
