Yet ANOTHER song meme...

Apr 09, 2011 20:36

Hard to believe, isn't it? Over the last week I've discarded half a dozen updates, either because I couldn't post them or because they were full of self-indulgent whinging (and I couldn't post them). Then, I went looking for a recipe I posted years ago and read some of my old posts and got depressed because, DAMN IT, I used to actually WRITE.

And now I'm playing with this lyrics meme again and face-palming a bit over how much OLD music I listen to.

Okay, ITunes on shuffle, first fifteen tunes, first lines (unless they contain the title...in which case next lines), give us the song title and, where possible, the artist. Feel RIGHTEOUS in your musical knowledge. Or your Dremiel knowledge. Or both. Win FABULOUS PRIZES a postcard or something. If you want anything uploaded just mention it. I am WAAAAY behind on uploads but will get my act together ANY DAY NOW...really.

ETA - Umm, Okay temporal_witch (whom I am quite sure is a cousin if we go back enough generations) pretty much ran the board here, although there are certainly a few songs where there are multiple possible artists. Feel free to check out her comment if you just want to see the answers or leave your own comment if you still wanna play...for the glory of, uh, second, or additional artists/original artist...or something.

Additional ETA: Since all the answers are up have a vid of the late and much lamented Kirsty MacColl doing "In These Shoes" live as it was brought to my attention that some people may not actually know of her. Which is CRIMINAL!

1.The Sickbed of Cuchulainn, The Pogues temporal_witch
McCormack and Richard Tauber are singing by the bed
There's a glass of punch below your feet and an angel at your head
There's devils on each side of you with bottles in their hands
You need one more drop of poison and you'll dream of foreign lands

2.Raspberry Beret, Prince huesiemama
I was working part time
In the five and dime
My boss was Mr. McGee

3. Crying, Roy Orbison temporal_witch
I was all right for awhile
I could smile for awhile
But I saw you last night
You held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say, "Hello"

4. In These Shoes?, Kirsty MacColl temporal_witch GOD I MISS KIRSTY!
I once met a man with a sense of adventure
He was dressed to thrill wherever he went
He said "lets make love on a mountaintop
under the stars on a big hard rock"

5. Further To Fly, Simon & Garfunkel temporal_witch or simply Paul Simon on this version
There may come a time
When you'll be tired
As tired as a dream that wants to die

6. Man of Constant Sorrow, The Soggy Bottom Boys temporal_witch
I've seen trouble all my day.
I bid farewell to old Kentucky
The place where I was born and raised.

7. Viva La Vida, Coldplay amand_r
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

8. Someone Keeps Stealing My Chair, They Might Be Giants temporal_witch
Mr. Horrible
Mr. Horrible
Telephone call for Mr. Horrible

9. Chasing Pavements, Adele temporal_witch
I've made up my mind,
Don't need to think it over
If I'm wrong I am right,
Don't need to look no further

10.Sloop John B., The Beach Boys temporal_witch
So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the mainsail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home

11. Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, U2 amand_r
I have climbed highest mountain
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you

12.Up on Cripple Creek, Bob Dylan temporal_witch (although this is the original by The Band)
When I get off of this mountain
You know where I want to go
Straight down the Mississippi river
To the Gulf of Mexico

13. Helpless, Neil Young temporal_witch or k.d. Lang blue_fjords (this one is Neil but k.d.'s is gorgeous, too)
There is a town in north Ontario,
With dream comfort memory to spare,
And in my mind
I still need a place to go,
All my changes were there.

14. Never Had Nobody Like You, M. Ward temporal_witch
Well, since time I had a mind, I been lazy
And times before that I was cruel
And times before that I was lean, I was mad

15. Passionate Kisses, Mary Chapin Carpenter temporal_witch or Lucinda Williams blue_fjords (this happened to be Lucinda's original but I have both)
Is it too much to ask
I want a comfortable bed that won't hurt my back
Food to fill me up
And warm clothes and all that stuff
Shouldn't I have this

three chords and the truth, lemming-like, addictive behaviors are fun!
