Ten not entirely random thoughts...

1. One of my college roommate's father just died. He'd been in an Alzheimer unit for about three years and last I heard had declined tragically. I see this lovely woman far less than I should: not from any grand split, just a gradual drift in lifestyle, schedules, priorities, husbands who don't really mesh (both are great but their overlap in interests is precisely zero), and oddly, geography (even though we both live in Austin we live pretty far from each other in a temporal sense). Still, I feel horribly guilty for letting her slip away, for not rescheduling that lunch that always gets rescheduled four or five times, for not being there. Damn.

2. My navy (w/ white pindots) shift, which has become my go to funeral dress for hot weather, is back from the cleaners and ready but the little bolero sweater is not with it. Did I hang it up elsewhere? Is it mixed in with Dave's suits, still at the cleaners?

3. How awful is it to have a "go to" funeral dress for hot weather and a "go to" funeral suit for not hot weather and to have trottted them out for seven funerals this year!  Five of those were friend's fathers. Yes, at 46 my close friends and I are in the prime demographic for dying parents (mostly fathers) but this is getting really, really old. If you are lucky enough to have living parents do something nice for them today, even if it is just a phone call. Hey, write an actual letter, they'll be stunned. Also, menfolk: take care of yourselves!

4. I am doing fun things with (and without) Dave while The Boy is at camp. We've been out a ton. Lots of great music and a couple of very nice dinners and an alarming amount of fried seafood. I've also been imbibing quite a bit -not to excess mind, but my liver is wondering why I confine most of my alcohol consumption to three weeks every summer! I have, however, been getting to the gym. Go me!

5.The produce I tossed on the compost pile this morning, my scale,  and my bank balance all attest to the fact that we may have been going out a bit too much!

6. Boy comes home on Wednesday. Miss him like a mad thing.

7. Starting next Thursday life is crazy-busy for five weeks. Acckk!  DO NOT WANT!

8. Oh, SHOWS! Very much enjoying Leverage, Burn Notice, In Plain Sight, and Top Chef Masters. In between the carousing and debauchery, of course. And Mad Men is back on 8/16!

9. Not getting enough sleep, see above.

10. STILL smiling about the Glen Hansard/ Iron & Wine concert Monday night. Sam Beam is an amazing musician and a thoroughly odd person. You're right Sam,  you sing better than you talk. Glen Hansard is absurdly, ridiculously , stunningly charismatic. I was utterly charmed, still am.
