So, today. It had been a pretty tough semester, dealing with my fears of public speaking, rounds and rounds of editing and still no end in sight. But the classes are over at last, and there's only one thing left to do this time round, and so I decided to take the whole day off. Whole day off work, off the computer. Just... off.
It helped that Momo told me to Go watch Wolverine, nooooooooow. So I checked the prices in the local cinema, and man was I surprised by how little it cost! Only $2.25, and $3.25 if you booked online for afternoon matinees. Evening prices were $4.25 (and $5.25 for online bookings) but - I couldn't believe it. It's dirt cheap. Of course, since this is really and truly out in the whoop-wops, with such a tiny cinema, it's unsurprising. I'm used to $18 prices (Auckland, NZ), or $7 (singapore), at the very least. Momo tells me that it's at least $15 where she is. $2.25 is cheaper than dirt.
(Of course these prices aren't converted to USD. They are all the countries' respective currencies. BUT they are sort of comparable within the countries.)
So I decided that, since there was no way I could get to Woodland Mall by myself - walking was out of the question even if I hadn't sprained my ankle - I might as well make a day trip of it. As soon as I woke up, get ready to go to the library, borrow some books because I deserved it and that's my idea of a fun time, honestly, and then bike my leisurely way up to the mall. Each leg of the journey would take about half an hour, because I was planning on biking slowly, and not get into any accidents. I couldn't afford it.
And today was a lovely day. It was a bit too windy for my light jacket, and I vainly decided to wear a short sleeved, v-necked blouse which wasn't much use for cutting the wind. Well, I did want to dress up for fun. Plus, it was my day out!
And so it went, I pedalled gently to the Library. It was quite a pretty day out, despite the wind, and since I was going just over walking speed I didn't have to work too hard against it. Spring was certainly in the air - trees were budding with pale flowers and 嫩叶 making everything look pastel and fresh, especially if the trees had white flowers. It's a very growing sort of scene. Bowling Green doesn't have enough trees, I think, but what trees they do use for landscaping along Main St is very pretty, red and maple and green all over, with some bright vivacious tulips dotting the pavements.
Not much to say about the library, except that I borrowed a couple of books, and hung around reading for a bit just to give my feet a rest. Then I was off to the mall.
I had been worried initially that the Main Street would cross into a Highway and thus make it impossible for me to get to the mall, but it turns out it was a groundless fear. The pavement got a bit narrow at spots, but there was continuous pavement running all the way up Main St and N. Main St, unlike down S. Main St, so that was good. Plus there were quite a bit of houses, probably meant for student rentals, along the way, with planted yards and lots of shade, so that was good. It was a very pleasant bike ride up.
Along the way I stopped by the dollar store, and eyed the pitchers they sold there. 2 Quart pitchers for a dolalr - that didn't seem too bad. And they were selling small containers too, with soft snap on lids. I like containers - I just can't think of anything I cook or do that'd justify the obtaining of said containers. If I had my beads, yes, but not like this.
But anyway. It was nice to browse without having to worry about the twenty-minute intervals that the North Shuttle uses, and since I had no intentions of buying much, I could browse all I liked.
Then I decided that it'd be silly to go to the movies with a pitcher in hand, so I biked on up a little more to the mall.
ONe thing I had thought about was that since Wolverine's a new release movie, it'd be one, more costly, and two, crowded.
I was wrong on both counts. Though, I suppose by the mall's standards, crowded meant 'tiny dinky theater being 3/4 full'. It's such a tiny theatre that they only had one tiny concession stand.
I saw one of my classmates (XiaoDong from the Matlab class) there with her boyfriend - she'd just finished the 1pm film, while mine was at 4.30pm. It made me feel a little odd to see her with her white, pretty older boyfriend, but then, who am i to judge? If she's happy, she's happy and that's the most important thing.
The mall was, as I remembered, pretty small, not many shops. I thought briefly of trying to locate a watch there, but i couldn't find any of the shops which sold it. I did see some GPS systems in Radioshack, though they were more expensive than Walmart's prices led me to expect. Still, I suppose for reliability you have to pay a bit more. and they were kinda cute and small.
Then it was movie time!
I won't spoil it for people, right now, but Gambit's a show off, there were tremendous amounts of explosions and surprisingly little blood, lots of sound effects, and occasional moments of hilarity. There were a bit of race issues here and there, which I could easily ignore for the sake of the story. But I do wish there were more females in the entire thing, rather htan 'Girl gets killed, girl becomes whole source of revenge for hero' and so on. Kinda old.
Like Wolverine. Heh.
Don't like Wade - he's not good looking, but I did like the sole Asian guy in the entire show. He's a good actor. I am sure I've seen him in other shows before.
