Part 1

Jensen watches as the boy sleeps, proud that Jared could still help someone in need. He thought he had lost the man he loved; it was pleasant to recognize that his Jared was still around sometimes. He moves over and places his hand on the boy’s shoulder and gently shakes him, watches as his eyes flutter open. “Hey, you awake?” he asks before the boy begins to sit up.

“Yeah,” he mumbles as he rubs his eyes.

“The sun’s getting ready to come up. When Jared gets back tell him, I’m proud of him.”

“Why?”

“He’ll know.” He tells the boy as he walks over to his horse.

“Yeah, but I won’t.”

“Just do it.” He tells the boy before petting the horse’s mane, “Bye Puck.” He whispers as he walks away.

Will watches Jensen leave until he can no longer hold his eyes open. He falls asleep just as the sky begins to turn lighter. He continues to sleep until he feels something nudging his foot. Opening his eyes once more he wonders when Jared got back.

“Get up, we need to leave.” Jared tells him as he puts out the fire that still burns.

“Alright.” Will replies, confused at why he has to get up so soon to leave. He begins helping Jared pack until he remembers Jensen. He drops what he was holding as he turns to face Jared. “Uhh..” he begins, “Jensen wanted me to tell you that he’s proud of you.”

“What?” Jared questions. He looks at the boy wondering what he’s playing at. “When did you see Jensen?”

“Last night, after you left.”

“That stupid fucker…” he whispers, “What’d he say to you?”

“Only that he’s proud of you.”

“Really?” he questions as a smile tugs at his mouth. “Well come on, we have to go.”

Will was walking beside Puck, watching the hawk circle. “What is up with the hawk?” he asked still staring.

“Just a friend.” Jared tells him grinning.

“Okay,” the boy replies, voice layered with frustration. “You and Jensen do fucking belong together.”

“Why do you say that?” Jared asked glancing over at Will.

“Cause you both like to avoid my questions.”

“You learn to do that, when you’re trying to protect the one you love.” Jared whispers solemnly.

“So why aren’t you two together?” Will asks, hoping Jared will actually answer him.

“We can’t be.” Jared replies.

“Dear God! Neither of you will give me a straight answer. At least Jensen told me it was his fault.” He shouts flailing his arms around.

Jared quickly slips from the horse and grabs the boy by his arms. “It wasn’t Jen’s fault!” he seethes.

“I was just going by what he said to me.” Will responds, eyes wide in fear.

Jared lets him go and turns around. “It wasn’t his fault. The horses were tired, needed to rest. If I wouldn’t have worried so much I would have been the one to suggest we stop.”

“What happened?” Will whispers, feeling the anguish thick in the air, like a storm was going to blow in.

“I don’t want to talk about it.” Jared says as he walks aside Puck. “I hate that memory.”

That night, with his back against the scratchy bark and his legs sprawled out in front of him; Will wonders where Jared keeps going. It had to be important for the man to leave him alone with the horse, knowing he was a thief. So what was so important?

Will looked up when a pair of legs stopped beside him. His eyes were met with a gentle smile, before the man was sitting beside him, and staring into the dark night. “I’ve been wondering…” Will said, his voice startling him a bit in the calm, quiet night. “Why would knights be scared of Jared?”

Jensen turned his head slightly and looked at the boy; he shrugged, wondering what the best way to answer that question was, before settling his eyes on the small fire, a few feet away. “We were the best. Other knights were nothing compared to us. A few years back we even took care of a dragon for a small village.”

“The dragon of Alistead?” Will waited for a nod, when it came his mouth turned into a frown, “I heard one of knights had died saving that village.”

“I would have, but Jared promised me he wouldn’t give up on me, made me promise the same thing.” Jensen whispered as he continued to stare at the flames as they licked towards the darkened sky, “I think he’s forgotten that promise.”

“I’m sorry.” Will whispers, being honest for the first time since before he left home.

“For what?” The older man asked turning to look at the boy’s face.

“I don’t know. I guess for it not being easier.”

A bittersweet smile took over Jensen’s face before he whispered back, “Love’s not supposed to be easy.”
