When Jensen met Jared at the way station traveling from Austin to Atlanta, he figured it would never happen again. He never in his wildest dreams thought about meeting the younger man again, let alone at the private hospital his son was in.

Jensen held back a grin as he watched huge red shoes scuff through the doorway of his son’s hospital room. “Howdy,” Jared joyfully said, his real grin almost matching the painted on one.

“Daddy,” Andy squealed, “A clown!”

Jared stayed for about an hour. He had Andy tearing up with laughs, and a fond smile on Jensen’s lips at seeing his son roll with laughter and not in pain for the first time in what seemed like weeks.

As Jared was getting ready to leave, Andy pulled on his overly baggy red and yellow polka-dotted shirt, “Will you come back tomorrow?” he asked, not wanting to lose his new friend.

“I’m sorry,” Jared replied frowning, “I have classes tomorrow, buddy. I usually only come on Tuesday’s.”

“Okay,” Andy answered, head tilting down as his fingers mussed with the covers. A cough bubbles from his chest, and Jared watches as the little boy brings his hands to his mouth to cover the covers.

“I’ll try to come back sooner,” he promises, his heart hurting as the boy’s back shakes from coughs.

“Really?” Andy asks when he’s finished coughing, his eyes turned up to look at Jared’s painted face.

“Promise buddy,” Jared tells him. “Nice to meet you again,” Jared says his hand reaching to enclose Jensen’s.

“You too,” Jensen responded, holding back his grin until Jared finally left the room.

Like Jared promised, he was back the next day. He was dressed in worn jeans, flip-flops, and a white shirt. “So,” he said walking into the room and looking directly at Jensen, “Can I speak with you?”

Jensen stood up from the chair beside of his son’s bed. He looked with confusion from his son to Jared, who still remained by the door. “I’ll be right back,” he told his son before following Jared out of the room.

“Please don’t be mad,” Jared started, “I talked to Andy’s doctor and he said he was well enough to take a day trip.”

“You talked to Doctor Padalecki?” Jensen questioned, glaring at the man, “Is that even ethical?”

“Please don’t be mad at him,” Jared rushed, “Jeff didn’t want to tell me, but I wouldn’t leave him alone.”

“Jeff?”

“Doctor Padalecki, he’s my brother, and I usually don’t ask about patients but Andy seems so sad and the fair is in town, and I was hoping you two would accompany me.”

“So you had your brother break confidence just to ask me on a date? How do you even know I’m not married?” Jensen said trying to keep from grinning at the blush appearing over his cheeks.

“I’m observant,” Jared told him. “Andy never asked about his mom, and you don’t wear a ring. Plus you were totally checking out my ass on the train.”

“Yeah, okay,” Jensen replied, “I’ll go get Andy ready.”

The day went great; Andy managed to have fun, and seemed to glow under the sun. “This has been awesome Jared,” Jensen leaned over to tell Jared on the ride back to the hospital.

“I can’t believe you won the big dog,” Andy said with glee, staring at the huge stuffed animal in Jared’s lap. “Daddy,” he says seriously, “you need to throw better.”

Jared laughed as Jensen blushed, throwing his head back before wiping tears from his eyes.

It wasn’t a long ride from the fair to the hospital, and soon they pulled up to the entrance. When Jensen and Andy climbed out of the cab, Jared followed. “Hey,” he whispered to Jensen, letting his fingers touch Jensen’s on the car door. “Can I come back tomorrow?”

Jensen grinned, “I’d like that. I’d like that a lot.”

“Jared’s coming back?!” Andy asked with excitement bouncing on his feet.

“Hmm,” Jared said looking at the little boy, “I haven’t brought you anything, and I’ve visited you two times already,” he told Andy faking shock before pushing the dog at the six year old, “How’s this?”

“Really? I can have the dog?” Andy questioned his eyes turned up to Jared in disbelief.

“If you take care of him,” Jared said, petting the stuffed animal that Andy now stood beside of him.

“I will,” Andy exclaimed, “I promise I will.”

“Then he’s yours,” Jared whispered as if it was a conspiracy. Jared smiled as Jensen looked down at his son.

“Thanks,” Jensen said to Jared, his eyes filled with happiness, “I’ll see you tomorrow.” Jensen leaned up and gently kissed the corner of Jared’s mouth before picking up his son and the stuffed dog and turning to go into the hospital.

“Wait,” Jared said, shaking off the kiss. He leaned into the back floor of the cab and picked up a tub, “I got Andy a tub of cotton candy,” he told the two before handing the tub of blue cotton candy to Andy and rubbing through Andy’s blonde hair until it was messy.

“Thank you,” Andy said through a yawn, “Had fun today,” he continued before dropping his head onto Jensen’s shoulder.

With a laugh Jensen looked from his son to Jared, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow,” Jared grinned, watching Jensen carry his son into the hospital before he slid back into the cab. “Tomorrow,” he whispered once more, staring contently at the entrance as the cab drove away.
