I came up to NY for my cousin Nikki's 50th birthday party. Tons of friends and family were invited from across the country, and world. Many showed up because she told us there was something special planned. A band, or show, or something a little crazy, we all wondered.
Not even close... a wedding.
For almost 10 years, my cousin has been living with, and virtually married to her boyfriend John. His children visit, one daughter calls it home. They own a house together. But no ring. After a divorse each, he once told me "it's wonderful to just know that every day we are together because we choose to be."
But what's a little extra security. After a few minutes of mingling at the party, the overdressed birthday girl and boyfriend suddenly announced that they were, in fact, bride and groom. A friend of theirs, who is a judge, presided over the informal cerimony (the groom was wearing a tux jacket, his father's bowtie, and jeans), which was beautiful. For a few moments, all felt truly good in the world.
