Last night (as in, my first night here) Zohar and I hit the town. The apartment isn't quite so luxurious from the outside but it's quite nice inside.,
but he lives in an amazing location, just a short walk from the beach and from “King George” and other hit Tel Aviv night life strips.
But when it comes down to it, what do you really need in an apartment. A computer (with DVD player) and internet. Done!
Zohar has two roomates. One is a model who he says "isn't too bright". The other is a really nice women named Renana who moved here from New York a few years ago. I am actually blogging from her room right now. We're been discussing the strange phenomena of "wedge" high heels (see below).
Anyway, last night Zohar and I took a round-about way of getting to the bars, walking down these long boulevards with street wide walking cooridors in center. People were out walking their dogs, flirting, sleeping, an even playing a late night game of chess. I was surprised by the diversity of the people. It wasn’t NY or SF, but it certainly wasn’t North West DC either. On one hand, everyone is “Israeli” and Jewish. But there are people who look white, Arab, Eastern European.
We went to two bars that could not have been more different. One was a divvy bar the reminded me so much of US dive bars I expected a Jello shot light to come on. It had a great local feel. World Cup playing on the TV, people laid back in good conversation, horrible heavy metal blaring from the speakers. We drank Murphy’s and talked about our ex-girlfriends. Then we went to another bar right in the center of it all (the corner of Rothschild and Allenby). This, on the other hand, felt exactly like a NY bar. Trendy cushions and funky bars, waitresses with tattooed smiles and “what can I get sweetheart”. We drank Goldstar (maybe a step up from Bud) and sat on the corner people watching.
What stood out to me, though, was the women. Trendy and stylish, but not too much. Honestly, it reminded me of how my friends look going out. Thinking about how you look just enough to look “your best,” but not someone else’s. Maybe there are trendy places, but I really liked the look. The only thing that cracked me up were the platforms. Everyone in platform shoes. I guess they have replaced high heels here, which is a step in the right direction, but if feels like quitting smoking but then getting addicted to the patch. It still looks silly.
After making phone of these shoes for a while, we finally wandered home. He fell asleep, I watched Snatch and connected to random wireless. I've got to say, having the lap top is incredible.
